  • Tracklander: the Must-Have App for Adventure Seekers

App developers seem to have already made apps for all kinds of people. Some of these apps become an instant hit and rock the entire industry for months while others create a short-lived stir and then fade into oblivion. Tracklander is the app that's tailor-made for iPhone users with a bit of wanderlust, and it appears to be holding its own in a marketplace brimming with all sorts of apps for active travelers and adventurers.

If you were to get a couple of days off work to relax, trekking or a road trip would be a perfect choice of recreational activity. However, a week is hardly enough time to properly plan a track. With Tracklander on your phone your entire trip planning will be taken care of and without blowing your budget. You are spared the hassle of using GPS, looking for tracks, and the like when preparing for the trip, as well as the prohibitive expenses of hiring a local guide.

Tracklander has re-invented travel apps by offering a digital platform based on a new concept of "independent but guided" adventurers. It comes packed with a full range of unique tracks that are customizable depending on the user's preferred terrain difficulty and time at hand. Therefore, your iPhone becomes your easy yet absolutely safe guide.

The app features a trackbook with numerous tracks in all sorts of destinations around the world for travelers to choose from; there are asphalt roads, off-road routes, mountain treks, and cities. Among these tracks are those suitable for SUV, 4X4, road car, trekking, cycling, and MTB, as well as trail, enduro, and road motorcycles. Each track has add-ons that Tracklander has included to create unique challenges graded from 1 to 5, shortcuts back to the main track if lost, escapes, days, and treats such as a waterfall, palm grove, vineyards, and beaches. Helpful features of the trackbook include photos of every upcoming junction, navigation help and area map, cultural info, and safety info.

Thanks to Tracklander's ingenious technology, the app will work offline without the roaming hassles and frustrations of finding 3G deep in forests or atop mountains. It is able to produce its own offline maps by using Tracklander's graphical models, NASA's topographical contours lines, and OpenStreetMap. These maps are downloaded once when the iPhone user is downloading the track. You say bye bye to data connection fees when travelling abroad.

    See Tracklander in action:

The tracks selected are the best adventure tracks in any given area. At the time Tracklander was hitting the App Store there were 33,973 miles of roads and tracks, 1,335 miles of cycle routes, and 667 miles of treks offered, which are equivalent to going around a quarter of the world, travelling from Copenhagen to Barcelona, and crossing Spain respectively.  The brave at heart can use the tracks for Morocco, Andalusia, Tuscany, and Transpirenaica while the rest can pick city-based track versions in Barcelona, Florence, and Lisbon. Even with this diversity, language is not a problem as the app supports English, Catalan, Spanish, German, French, and Italian.

The app also has the Trip Planner, a featured functionality that enables social networking and sharing of experiences via blogs. You get to invite other Tracklander travelers and organize the trips.

The app comes free. A number of both city and countryside tracks are also available for free. The rest of the track features vary in price depending on the area chosen and difficulty level. Generally it will cost you €2.99 for a half or full day's travel; €9.99 from one to two days; and €34.99 from six to ten days.

  • LG's Optimus G Successor Officially Named G2

    LG
is not taking the future of its premium smartphone lightly; it's taken its "G" game to a new level by developing a follow up to the original Optimus G and dubbing this new Snapdragon 800-based creation G2. LG G2 Becomes the company's first smartphone launched under the new "G" premium brand.

The announcement made things clear between the new G2 and its predecessor Optimus. LG is dropping the Optimus name and elevating the G series to the company's flagship lineup. The new G devices are aimed at building upon LG's reputation of excellence that the older G Series products have already established.

Perhaps this revelation is minor considering the world is already drowning in the so many leaked secrets of the smartphone, but this naming fits into a small piece of the puzzle we're all holding our breaths to see unleashed on August 7th.

Other changes in LG's products include the rebranding of the premium 4:3 display smartphones as "Vu" and onwards. All series feature the familiar UX and next generation core technologies, but each series will highlight a distinct quality of LG's product expertise.

  • New Roamer App Reduces Call Roaming Bills Abroad up to 90%

The phone bill can shoot up to a hefty amount when you are travelling abroad due to steep call roaming charges. However, there is now an app that lightens this financial load for iOS and Android mobile device users. Roamer is a new app for iOS and Android that saves users call forwarding bills abroad by up to 90%.

Roamer allows call forwarding so you can receive and make calls with the app anywhere in the world. The app simply forwards a user's regular number to a local SIM card at their destination. Once at the destination, the user can be able to call their home country or elsewhere abroad using their regular caller ID. As for local calls, the local SIM suffices.

Using local cellular networks means the Roamer app-based calls are high quality. You have to pay native rates, though, to make calls.

The app is available on the App Store and Google Play as a free download. Roaming credits are available in packages of $13, $16, $39, and $65. The company has promised to release BlackBerry and Windows Phone versions soon.

  • Microsoft OneNote Updated

Microsoft has released a major new version of its OneNote app for iOS. A post on the official Office blog says that iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch users will now be getting a much more rich editing experience.

The app is designed such that you can see any markings you draw on a note using a Windows tablet on the other devices. Formatting and files, including borders, graphs, texts, and more, look similar across all iOS devices.

Microsoft says users can sync their notebooks with Share Point and Office 365. The devices also support file sharing between Office users. Additionally, the One Note app is much like Google as multiple people can now edit a note simultaneously.

Among the features on the iPad app is the Office Ribbon UI, an Office app feature that has become synonymous with other devices. There is now more text, customization options for style, color, font, and size, as well as insert and edit tables and graphs.

On the iPhone, Microsoft has finally delivered an optimized One Note app for the iPhone 5 display just eight months after its launch.

  • Mozilla Planning to Launch Lower Cost Smartphone in Emerging Markets

Mozilla has recently announced its plan to associate with smart phone manufacturers and launch new products priced under the $50 mark for the emerging markets.

Primarily Mozilla is targeting this market because it offers a lot of revenue potential and with 60% of all cell phone consumers being smartphone users, Mozilla expects to see a high level of acceptability in this market, especially because it’s one that has been ignored for some time by high end Android smartphone manufacturers. The projected Firefox operating system for these low-cost mobile phone devices will offer an alternative to the higher priced android or iOS systems.

Mozilla’s senior vice president, Li Gong believes there are huge opportunities in emerging markets where consumers want smart phones at affordable prices. Mr. Gong goes on to say that his company plans on procuring a 10% market share of the smartphone industry, although he didn't say when this would happen.

These under $50 priced phones would be ideal for emerging markets like China, India, Latin America and other countries. Several smartphone manufacturers are excited about the project and have already started manufacturing the devices.

Mozilla, currently in the testing phases of the new Firefox OS system, says there are 18 major telecommunications organizations supporting this new OS. Mr. Gong goes on to say that this new mobile software is lighter, and uses less memory compared to the Google android or Apple iOS, yet offers the same performance. Mozilla expects to launch it’s first Firefox OS powered devices sometime this year in Brazil through the Telefonicas, commercial brand, Vivo.

Google, in an effort to stay on top of its game, is considering this option as well, and may plan on launching their own low cost mobile devices powered on the chrome mobile operating system.

  • Jolla Sailfish Phone: Make Way for the Quirkiest Smartphone to Date

A solid band of engineers decided to leave Nokia in 2012 and went on their way to developing a Meego-derived operating system dubbed as “Sailfish”. The development process was quite successful and this led the band of engineers to their next problem: they needed a new vehicle to host the software. The answer now comes in the form of the newest and the first Jolla phone that is known to be as “quirky” as the OS that it operates on.

In addition to its dual-core processor, a 4.5-inch display screen, 4G capabilities, an 8-megapixel camera, a microSB slot, and 16GB of onboard storage, the most striking feature of this new phone is its contrasting removable back cover. Believe it or not, this new Jolla phone has the capacity to detect which back cover is attached to it and automatically change its display theme to match the cover that it detects. In addition to that, the covers currently available for this new smartphone comes in slightly different forms, giving users a unique smartphone every time they change back covers. The new Jolla phone is a shape shifter that will surely fit consumers’ shifting tastes.

Despite the fact that it runs on its own Sailfish OS, developers at Jolla maintain that the newest and the first Jolla phone will be “Android-compliant”. Since the phone is based on an OS that was based on Meego, an OS that initially powered the Nokia N9, skeptics are worried about this claim. The main concern that people have about the phone’s Android compatibility is the selection of applications that will be available for the Jolla phone and the means through which users will be able to download them. Other than that, consumers are excited to see how the best and the most popular Android apps will be made to fit this new Android-compliant Jolla phone.

The first Jolla phone made its debut on selected European countries and is set to roll out in the rest of the world in the months to come. Set to cost consumers around $500 dollars for a single unit, it falls just within the reasonably priced smartphone category, especially when its unique features are considered. Looks like the quirky public finally got the quirky smartphone that it has been looking for.

     scanadu_scout
Star Trek's Tricorder will soon become a reality with Scanadu Scout, the medical tricorder that has set a record on Indiegogo for the fastest funding velocity. Its unprecedented simplicity extends to even charging, whereby a micro-USB adapter connects it to a USB port and in less than an hour it is fully charged. This charge will last up to a week while using it a couple of times a day. Maintaining its cleanliness after use is also hassle-free with just a disinfecting wipe or damp towel.

Six months ago, a prototype was first revealed that had a computation power of an Apple II at 8-bit. The new edition has been upgraded to 32-bit, making it ideal for a smartphone. The revolutionary device has actually been built on NASA's Micrium, a real-time OS for SAM (Sample Analysis at Mars) used on Rover Curiosity.

Since the prototype's unveiling, Scanadu has been receiving constant emails and calls from researchers, students, parents, and body hackers seeking to be part of the exploratory community of the first generation Scanadu Scout. Starting from Saturday the 25th of May, 2013, Scanadu Scout supporters have been given the go-ahead to reserve a first-edition Scanadu Scout on Indiegogo and become its first generation consumers.

In the campaign, they will be part of a usability study and give feedback on the usability, feasibility, and consumer friendliness. This is all crucial to Scanadu's road to FDA and will affect the revolutionary tool's final design and characteristics. When the device is FDA-approved and ready for the market, its app will come in iOS and Android versions, and will support Bluetooth 4.0 Smart Low Energey (LE).

The Indiegogo campaign will last 30 days and among the perks it will offer include a tour of NASA Ames Research Park, a day at NASA as a citizen astronaut for a space medicine workshop, and regular updates from Scanadu. As you scout yourself and provide Scanadu with the feedback to refine the device, you will be helping to make the vision of this being the last generation to know so little about their health a reality. The first 1,000 participants will receive a $149 early bird special for the device. The expected retail price for additional units is $199.

Scanadu Scout will be shipped in March 2014.
