  • HTC Sensation XL with Audio Beats

After the HTC Sensation XE, here is another model produced by the Taiwanese manufacturer that comes with Beats Audio. We are talking about HTC Sensation XL, the smartphone everyone says is the Android Gingerbread version of HTC Titan. Its huge 4.7-inch touchscreen has a S-LCD matrix of 480×800 pixels.

We are presenting you a list of specifications for the new HTC Sensation XL.

    Screen: 4.7”, 480×800, S-LCD
    Chipset: Qualcomm MSM8255
    CPU: 1.5 MHz, single core
    RAM: 768 MB
    Internal memory: 16 GB
    Expandable memory: No
    Operating system: Android 2.3 Gingerbread
    Interface: HTC Sense UI 3.5
Photo camera: 8 megapixels, BSI sensor, 28 mm, autofocus, LED

Big phones are not for everyone, and HTC Sensation XL is definitely a big and relatively heavy smartphone. We expected to find the 540×960 pixels resolution on this phone, but the manufacturer has chosen a slightly smaller one. After reading the specifications we noticed they are very similar to another recently announced smartphone, iPhone 4S. The new Sensation has a similar 8 MP Backlit sensor (BSI) and the lens offers an equivalent opening of 28mm.

HTC Sensation XL was especially created for music enthusiasts. The phone has audio output as well as support from Beats Audio. It also comes with a pair of headphones especially designed for it, called UrBeats. Interestingly, when a pair of UrBeats headphones is connected, the phone recognizes and activates a special audio profile.

The manufacturer will include the HTC Watch application that allows downloading or streaming thousands of movies and TV shows.

HTC Sensation XL will be available on the European market starting from November.

  • iPhone 5 Arrives Today!

Today is the day when the long-awaited launch of iPhone 5 will take place, during the “Let’s Talk iPhone” event held in Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino, at 10:00am PDT.

The new smartphone is expected to be presented by the new Apple's CEO Tim Cook, but it’s possible that Apple’s founder and former CEO, Steve Jobs, will make his appearance at this much-coveted event.

Apple hopes to produce five, maybe six million units in October, and by the end of the year to reach the impressive number of 22 million.

According to sources inside the company, cited these days by international media, the new iPhone 5 would feature a 4-inch retina display, with a resolution of 960×640 pixels, 1 GB RAM and a new A5 Dual Core processor of 1.4 GHz, 60% faster than the one used on iPhone 4. Apple’s new product is expected to have an 8-megapixel camera, capable of HD recording in 1080p.

The new smartphone would also include the iCloud technology, which allows user to store music, movies and other files, that can be accessed remotely. In addition, the new iPhone 5 would have the possibility of being charged wirelessly.

The same sources said that iPhone 5 will be available in only two versions, black and white, of 16 and 32 GB respectively. The pricing would start from $639, according to a screen capture that represents a mock-up post which “came to surface” on the telecom operator’s website, Cincinnati Bell.

Interestingly, Apple representatives might launch today a cheaper version too, called iPhone 4S, which will cost only $99. This one will have a 3.5-inch display, a 5-megapixel camera and A5 Dual Core processor, according to the rumors.

What the market expects and what Apple has to win

Brian White, analyst at the financial intermediation company Ticonderoga, believes the demand will be so big that Apple might establish a new sales record by launching iPhone 5, after its predecessor has sold in 1.7 million units in the first three days of presence in stores. The analyst also said that he expects the new model to have a casing similar with MacBook and that Apple will need to upgrade the speed of its processor in order to face the competition with Samsung Galaxy S II.

Apple has become in the second quarter of this year the producer with the biggest sales of smartphones worldwide. Thus, the company sold 20.34 million units in the second quarter, surpassing Nokia, which was leader in smartphones sales in the first quarter with over 24 million units.

Even though Apple became leader, the most significant increase in units sold was recorded by Samsung, by selling 19.5 million smartphones in the second quarter. Apple has sold only with about 2 million units extra in the second quarter, while taking the leadership was also caused by the huge loss of Nokia.

We think that after today’s launch and by enlarging the supply chain, Apple will definitely maintain its leading position. We also expect the launch of the new generation of iPhones to stimulate the sales of the previous Apple’s models by putting them on sale.

  • Microsoft and Samsung Have a Deal on Windows Phone and Sharing Patents

Microsoft and Samsung have signed an agreement targeting three important goals: developing Windows Phone solutions, distribution of Android devices and exchange of patents. The formalization of this agreement, of a great importance for its content and its strategic value, will undoubtedly lead to significant changes in mobile devices.

    The Pro-Windows Phone Agreement
The two parties have decided to get involved in developing new environmental solutions for Windows Phone, just a few days after the announcement of the first Samsung devices equipped with Windows Phone Mango, which widely opens new horizons for both groups. Microsoft needs manufacturers that ensure the quality, while Samsung is looking for an alternative in avoiding an imbalance generated by favoring the Android operating system.

    The Anti-Android Agreement
Another very interesting move made by the two companies is what concerns the Android devices: Microsoft will receive from Samsung a share of the profits obtained from the sale of each Android smartphone distributed.

It's quite difficult to assess the amount in order to determine whether this sum is close to the $ 5 for each device – amount agreed into the contract signed by Microsoft with HTC.

Another interesting fact is that Samsung has also signed, in this context, on the mention: “Android violates the Microsoft’s intellectual property so that Samsung accepts the payment of a small “fine” in order to continue distribution without problems”.

An excellent move on the chessboard of the biggest players on the market, given that the group in Redmond will receive the more so as its Android rival will be successful, which will definitely lead to a confrontation with the colossus in Mountain View.

    The Agreement on Patents
Even the thorny issue targeting the patents has found the solution in the agreement signed by both parties: Microsoft and Samsung have granted a mutual license for the exchange of strategic patents, so that both groups will be able to develop their projects without the risk of further legal battles.

The content of the agreement puts Google against the wall in the most serious way, but brings to the forefront the possibility of adopting a compromising solution on the issue of patents battle.

Advancing the idea of licensing as a viable solution, through which the intellectual property is being recognized, it is clearly approaching this issue, in the spirit of supporting the innovation and the development in the technology sector.

Omnia W has 3.7-inch Super AMOLED screen, a 1.4 GHz processor, 5-megapixel camera and 512 MB RAM and 8GB internal memory.

According to Microsoft, Windows Phone was developed in order to provide intuitive phones, "smart and socially connected." The six Microsoft applications provide interesting content and innovative communication experience. The flawless access to entertainment can be made thanks to the integration of Picture Hub, Music & Video Hub – provided by Microsoft Zune – and Game Hub, which provides the latest social gaming experiences through Xbox Live. This interface allows players to chat even during the game.

Users can stay up to date with the latest news and events via the Now 2.0, which offers live information regarding business, stock markets or weather. RSS Time allows downloading and reading RSS feeds for newspapers, magazines and blogs in an easy and digestible format; the articles of interest can be instantly shared by e-mail or posted on Facebook.

The device offers enhanced integration of social networks, by adding the Twitter and LinkedIn networks to Omnia’s interface. Thus, pictures and videos can be shared instantly across a variety of social networks with no complications.

Omnia W will be commercially available in late October in Italy and gradually worldwide, including the rest of Europe, CIS, Latin America, Africa, Southern and Southwestern Asia.

Telematics Update Releases “In-Vehicle Smartphone Integration” Report

  • Telematics Update Releases “In-Vehicle Smartphone Integration” Report

Telematics Update released a new report that presents the key to a successful smartphone integration business ventures. The report, titled “In-Vehicle Smartphone Integration”, is a comprehensive analysis of smartphone integration dynamics and the strategies of key industry players.

After interviewing 19 leading stakeholders within the telematics industry, such as Mercedes, Hyundai, Volvo, Microsoft and Verizon, and also over 100 experts in this industry, Telematics found that nearly 50% of the companies interviewed are making a “substantial effort" in the development of smartphone resident apps, while one third of respondents said simplified in-car app interface is the most important element of a smartphone interface when making their next vehicle purchase.

According to the report, almost half of companies across the telematics industry are focusing their development budget on smartphone resident applications. Other key focus points are embedded  apps and comms in head unit as well as embedded apps using smartphone connectivity.

Microsoft’s Walter Sullivan believes there are prospects for embedded communications in the car. He said: “There are some markets where there is limited ability to establish the data connection over Bluetooth from the car via a tethered connection…Having the embedded approach is one way to get around that.”

In the report, OEMs reveals that two key drivers behind strategies to integrate apps into the vehicle are:
    • meeting customer expectations
    • improving product attractiveness

Hyundai’s Michael Dietz explains that the company’s Blue Link-branded telematics solution is about more than the technology: “Blue Link is a telematics offering that enables us to develop a direct relationship with our consumers. At the end of the day, it’s all about forming the relationship.”

The report is created for both Tier 1 and Tier 2 companies and also for Automotive OEMs, which will be able to gather information and learn from OEMs using their already-in-place smartphone apps.

The report is equipped with case studies of existing OEM smartphone applications from OnStar, Toyota, Mercedes-Benz USA, BMW and Mini.

In one of the case studies, Nick Pudar, Vice President of OnStar Planning and Business Development, has explained the importance of their relation with General Motors, and how the two companies have learned to work together:
“When we design services that have an impact on the car and the hardware, it’s like a family discussion. OnStar is a wholly owned subsidiary of GM and we have a tightly integrated set of requirements with the vehicle. Historically we have been focused on safety and security services. When it comes to infotainment, we began working together several years ago. The growing overlap with connectivity and infotainment means we have to work even more closely together.”

Today, OnStar has over six million subscribers, is offered in over 50 different GM vehicles, and provides a number of telematics services including subscription-based communications, in-vehicle security, hands-free calling, turn-by-turn navigation, and remote diagnostics systems throughout the US, Canada and China.

Driver distraction is a key concern for all OEMs, and lines of responsibility within the eco-system have been blurred for many implementers. Pudar was asked about who is ultimately responsible in the GM – OnStar partnership for driver distraction and defining the HMI:

“It’s a team effort. The GM HMI organization has the ultimate responsibility for driver interaction with the vehicle. What we can do from inside OnStar is to provide options. One example is around text messaging. Clearly texting while driving is not a good thing as it exists. There are two profoundly different mindsets. The first is to make it impossible to text while driving. The other is to address the issues around texting. There is a societal expectation that people will respond immediately. Ideally, texting solutions should work in two modes. Mode number one is where the car should automatically respond on your behalf to any texts saying that you are driving and that you will respond as soon as it’s convenient. The other mode should enable texts to be read out – some may be very important to your journey or to your job – and should allow you to respond with a short verbal response that can be transcribed into text.”

“Finally, the system could be set up into a mode that most teenagers seem to know nothing about, which is to use the phone to call back and have a conversation. The key thing is that the car and phone should know when the phone is in the car, and modify behavior appropriately.”

Combatting the ever growing issue of driver distraction Telematics Update’s report examines these concerns and the potential legislation surrounding them. Driver distraction, as well customer experience, is accounted for guiding the creation of lucrative smartphone integration business models.

VoX has also informed that it plans to offer high-speed data and satellite services to its existing and new customers. According to the company, the combination of wholesale economics and business model, open platform, 4GLTE network and growing device ecosystem is the key reason why VoX chose to partner with LightSquared to deliver its innovative services.

  • Amazon All-Inclusive. How the Company Wants to Promote Its Kindle Tablet

Amazon tries to rethink their offers in order to make their products more attractive, given that the competition becomes fiercer. According to Wall Street Journal, with the launch of its first color tablet, Amazon might introduce a featured package that will allow users, in exchange for a $ 79/yr fee, to have access to the books from Book Store, to listen to music using the Cloud Player offer and to access movies from Amazon Instant Movie.

Moreover, Amazon is developing other applications designed to cut ground from under Netflix’s feet, one of its main rival.

According to WSJ, the subscription will be paid monthly and will allow unlimited access to Amazon services. Sources quoted by the newspaper say that publishers would be very excited about the idea of unlimited access to the Book Store, considering that the book prices differ and that introducing a general tax could depreciate the value of books.

The new tablet, called simple Kindle, like Amazon’s e-readers series, would be launched, probably, in October this year. Amazon is counting on the gadget’s success especially because the price is very competitive – only $250, the same as Barnes & Noble's Nook Color.

The tablet, full-color with 7-inch multi-touch capacitive display, will run a modified version of Android 2.2, named Kindle OS. According to Techcrunch.com, which tested a prototype version of the tablet – DVT (Design Verification Testing), the tablet does not excel in terms of hardware. It has a single core processor, only 8 GB storage capacity, no photo or video camera and features only Wi-Fi connectivity, but excels in chapter software.

Techcrounch.com predicts that Amazon could also launch, in the first quarter of 2012, an improved version of Kindle that will have a dual-core processor and a 10-inch touchscreen.

  • Google Supplies HTC with Ammunition for the Battle Against Apple

The legal war Apple bears with the biggest manufacturers of touchscreen mobile devices could take a new turn, after Google, the giant behind the most popular operating system for smartphones and tablets – Android – decided to help its customers by providing certain invention patents with which the companies can challenge Apple in court, writes Bloomberg.

Google has transferred a package of nine patents in the property of the Taiwanese manufacturer, HTC, on which the Asian company has initiated a legal action against Apple. Google declined to comment on the reasons why they had made that transfer.

Analysts consider that the move represents a new step in the fight which now bears in courts among the big companies. Google, which has been criticized before that it stood aside, while its partners that were using Android were being hit in court by Apple, decided to take a more active role in the fight on the so-called touchscreen market, considered as one of the most competitive.

Recently, the company that owns the most popular internet search engine has announced that it intends to expand its patents portfolio in order to protect themselves against the legal actions concerning the theft of technology. Google faces in this race a strong competition from the same Apple.

Google's decision to transfer the patents to HTC comes shortly after Apple acquired, from a German court, a blocking in sales of Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, on the basis of infringement of some invention patents on the hardware side. Apple has also filed lawsuits to its rivals HTC and Motorola.

Android, the operating system developed by Google for both tablets and smartphones, has supremacy in this segment with a market share of about 50%.
