  • Visualon Integrates On2 VP6 Video Into Mobile Apps

On2 Technologies has licensed its On2 VP6 video format and software to VisualOn Inc.

VisualOn is to integrate VP6 decoding software into its multimedia application suite for mobile platforms.

These software applications allow consumers to play rich multimedia content on mobile devices without expensive dedicated hardware.

The power-efficient software codecs and multimedia applications offer everything needed to enable video, audio, and still image applications on a range of devices.

Last month, On2 Technologies announced a 1080p video encoder aimed at improving image quality and compression performance in battery operated devices and consumer electronics.

The new hardware design, the Hantro 8270, supports H.264 Baseline, Main and High Profile video along with 16Mpixel JPEG still images.

Yang Cai, CEO of VisualOn, said the widespread presence of On2 VP6 content on the web makes it an essential format for VisualOn’s product portfolio.

"Adding VP6 to our application suite will enable mobile users to watch high-quality VP6 without requiring a bleeding-edge processor or a pocketful of batteries," he said.

"Our customers as well as consumers ultimately benefit from the high quality, lower power, and reduced cost achieved through VisualOn’s partnership with On2."

On2 VP6, through its inclusion in the Adobe Flash and Sun JavaFX application platforms, has become the de facto format for web video and a fundamental requirement for Internet-connected mobile devices.

Matt Frost, COO and interim CEO of On2 Technologies, said that when compared to H.264 Baseline profile (a video format used in wireless applications) On2 VP6 content offers 10-20 per cent better video compression performance while requiring less computing power to play.

He said that as a result, VP6 enables a wider range of mobile devices to play high-quality content without sacrificing battery life.

"We are pleased to have VisualOn optimize and integrate On2 VP6 to their application suite," he said.

"They have exceptional skill and experience in delivering highly optimized multimedia software for mobile devices, and we look forward to seeing high-performance playback of our codec as an integral part of their solutions."

  • ARCHOS Offers Android-powered Smartphone

ARCHOS is to bring out a touchscreen smartphone based on the Android operating system.

The new ultra-thin Internet Media Tablet (IMT) will have voice support and deliver "PC-like" performance, according to ARCHOS.

It is similar to the Archos 5 media tablet – with the big differences being voice support and the Android OS.

ARCHOS is to use Texas Instrument’s OMAP 3 platform, which will allow the processor to use less power without affecting performance.

According to hdtv.biz-news, the device will allow playback of HD video while offline.

Remi El-Ouazzane, vice president and general manager for TI’s OMAP platform business unit, said: "The OMAP 3 platform, with its support for the Android OS, is a powerful tool to support HD video, high quality multimedia and connectivity anytime and anywhere."

The IMT will be ready in Q3 of this year.

ARCHOS will give more details about the device at next week’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

But a statement from the company did say that it was "looking to expand beyond portable media players to provide solutions for the converged space, where a foundation in high-quality video content delivery is a benefit".

"ARCHOS is marrying its rich digital media history with voice functionality to tackle new markets," said the company.

Some core features of this smartphone include:

    • 5-inch touchscreen
    • Adobe Flash and Flash Video support
    • unrestricted access to TV, movies, music
    • games
    • photos
    • TV recording and HD playback
    • 500GB storage
    • 7 hour video playback battery life
    • runs on a 3.5G 7.2Mb/s HSUPA.
  • Gizmo5 Introduces Browser-Based VoIP Application

Gizmo5 has launched a web-based VoIP app that allows users to call 800 numbers and SIP addresses for free.

GizmoCall is Flash-based, so it only requires a browser to use the service rather than having to download a software client.

Users go to the Web site, sign up for a username and password, and start making calls.

The service can also accept inbound calls to the login user name, so long as the app is running in a window or browser tab.

You can also drop one line onto a webpage to do inbound calling from GizmoCall.

To make outbound calls, users require a GizmoCall account.

The Adobe Flash client should work on Mac, Windows and Linux platforms.
