  • Nokia Launches Its First Windows Phone 7 Smartphones

Nokia has launched, on Wednesday, at Nokia World event held in London, its first smartphones running Windows Phone 7 Mango, Nokia Lumia 800 and 710, phones that did not make a splash whatsoever.

Nokia Lumia 800: The First Nokia Smartphone with WP7

The launch of Nokia Lumia 800 represents the most important step made by Nokia – the formal adoption of Microsoft's mobile operating system.

Lumia 800 is similar in terms of design with Nokia N9 (OS MeeGo), has a polycarbonate casing and 3.7-inch AMOLED ClearBlack display. The first Finnish smartphone with Windows Phone has a 1.4 GHz processor and hardware acceleration, a graphics processor. Interesting is the fact that it offers only 16 GB storage capacity, but allows other 25 GB to be stored in cloud.

The phone has an 8-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens, auto-focus and dual LED flash. It remains to be seen how good it is.

The new smartphone scores in terms of colors, being available in black, blue and the version called "magenta".

The price for Nokia Lumia 800 will start from EUR 420 ($ 590), the phone being already available for pre-order on Nokia's website in France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain and the UK (with delivery in November).

Also, pre-orders can also be made for countries like Hong Kong, India, Russia, Singapore and Taiwan, and deliveries will be made until the end of 2011. On other markets/in other countries, Nokia Lumia 800 will be released early next year only.

Nokia Lumia 710: Windows Phone 7 and 1.4 GHz Processor

Besides the high-end model Lumia 800, Nokia has also announced at the Nokia World event the second terminal manufactured by the Finnish company that runs Windows Phone 7. Nokia World 710 promises great user experience to the platform offered by Microsoft at an affordable price.

Lumia 710 has a 1.4 GHz processor, which guarantees a high performance, a 3.7-inch AMOLED ClearBlack display and offers interchangeable casings, in colors like black, cyan, white, fuchsia and yellow. This terminal focuses on the social networking. Moreover, Windows Phone Mango platform has been optimized to include a series of Nokia services such as Nokia Drive and Nokia Music.

Nokia Lumia 710 will be available at a price around EUR 270 ($ 380).

Nokia Asha 200, 201, 300, 303: QWERTY Keyboard at Affordable Prices

Nokia Asha 200 and Nokia Asha 201 are two other affordable phones presented at the Nokia World event.

Nokia Asha 200 is a dual SIM model with Easy Swap function, available in vivid colors, which will delight the youngsters passionate about communication. The phone has QWERTY keyboard and promises an impressive autonomy of up to 52 hours in audio playback.

Nokia Asha 201 is the single-SIM version of the Asha 200, a model that also aims for the young generation. The phone has a powerful speaker and FM radio, the other specifications being similar with those on Asha 200.

The price for both, Nokia Asha 200 and Nokia Asha 201 is the same, around EUR 60 and will be available in stores by the end of this year.

Nokia Asha 303 comes with a 2.6-inch capacitive touchscreen, 1GHz processor and combo keyboard. The phone has a 5-megapixel camera.

Nokia Asha 300 comes with features similar with the 303 model, but in addition has dual SIM. WhatsApp messgener and Angry Birds are connected to this phone.

  • Nokia N9, Love at Second Sight

Nokia N9, the charismatic smartphone with MeeGo OS is one of those gadgets that after an initial period of time conquers you irremediably thanks to its outstanding design and its fresh and different operating system.

You cannot feel a certain sadness at the thought that the N9 will get a limited release and the promising MeeGo will be placed somewhere on a shelf where it will be getting dusty.

    Slim and stylish
Nokia N9 has a minimalistic casing, with a thickness of only 12 mm and a curved AMOLED ClearBlack screen of 3.9 inches, having a resolution of 854 x 480 pixels. Its colorful menu icons, displayed by the splendid screen, perfectly contrast with the black matte case.

Nokia had the kindness to include in package a case designed to protect the casing from scratches. Its casing impresses primarily by impairing the phone’s design, going almost unnoticed, which unfortunately cannot be said for many smartphones.

    Fresh air
Nokia N9 uses MeeGo 1.2 Harmattan, the most refined version of the operating system developed by Nokia in collaboration with Intel. For those familiar with Android’s key layout or with the iPhone’s Home key, the no-button interaction used by N9 will definitely be an interesting experience.

After using intensively the Android OS and the iOS, MeeGo seems a breeze of freshness. Vivid icons, fluid animations and a very modern look dominate the N9 operating system's interface. An example is the clock – in order to set the alarm you have to turn the two disks associated with hours and minutes.

The menu and the applications are working excellent, despite the fact that the hardware used by Nokia N9 is not very impressive. The phone has a Cortex A8 processor at 1GHz, but is helped by 1GB RAM and a GPU PowerVR SGX530. The internal memory is 16 or 64 GB.

    Camera
Upon hearing the news that Nokia will launch the N9, many fans were expecting the smartphone to have an even better camera than the one on N8. Things are not quite so, the Finnish giant preferring a different approach for the N9. The phone has an 8-megapixel camera with a smaller sensor than in N8 but with the same excellent Carl Zeiss optics.

N9 also offers 720p video shooting, something not very impressive considering that we already have plenty of smartphones with 1080p. Videos are also decent, but nothing remarkable.

Camera interface is complex, providing access to a multitude of options, from setting the ISO exposure, geo-tagging, formatting or selecting one of the six different scenes.

    Applications
The ecosystem of applications should be the Achilles heel for Nokia N9, taking into account the somewhat limited offer from Ovi Store, but things are not so. You will not have access to the hundreds of thousands of applications in the App Store, but you will find applications mainly covering the needs list and also some top games. You have access to dedicated applications for Facebook, Twitter, multimedia playback applications or games like Angry Birds or NFS Shift.

Nokia N9 supports a wide range of files, both office and multimedia. With the Documents application you can open text files or PDFs, while the video player supports MKVs. No shortage of navigation applications Maps and Drive or the Ovi Music service.

Nokia N9 shows those who criticized the lack of innovation of the Finnish giant that the flame has not yet been extinguished and that Nokia can still be a milestone in the mobile world. The problem is that Nokia N9 arrived a year too late, has a pretty high price and is not enjoying the deserved attention.

We will probably see phones with hardware and design similar with N9’s during the Nokia World event, but that will run Windows Phone Mango.

Galaxy Nexus is over iPhone 4S when it comes to memory too, having 1GB RAM, double than the iPhone 4S. In addition, Galaxy Nexus comes with the NFC technology, which allows the user to use its phone as a digital wallet.

With a thickness of 8.94mm and with a frame of 4.29mm, Galaxy Nexus offers a greater portability.

The first smartphone equipped with Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich. Ice Cream Sandwich brings a completely and entirely new appearance to the Android platform. It has a redesigned interface with improved multitasking, notifications, Wi-Fi hotspot, NFC support and an improved web experience.

Galaxy Nexus presents software navigation buttons for the first time on smartphones with Android. Locking the screen, the home screen, phone applications and all other elements have been rethought and redesigned to make the Android platform simple, attractive and useful.

Also, Ice Cream Sandwich comes with a new application, called People, which allows interacting with friends, family and colleagues, viewing their photos at high resolution, and following the latest updates on the statuses on Google+ and other social networks.

  • Smartphones – Present and Future

More than 200,000 units of iPhone 4S, the world’s leading smartphone, have been sold following its release into the market in the past week, and sales worldwide are still picking up. Just what is it about smartphones today that make them the hottest item in the global shopping list?

Market analysts this week indicated that the success of the leading smartphones available today may be attributed to the specialized niche for the product created by Apple when the company launched its first iPhone model in 2007. The researchers pointed out that smartphones were not an invention of Apple; the device has been in the market for a couple of years before the 2007 iPhone launch.

However, the iPhone defined the smartphones once and for all: hands down, it became the most dramatic universal device ever invented as the human race left the old and entered the new millennium.

So many things can be said about this gadget and still leave so many things unsaid. The most recent studies showed that the smartphone is so common, in fact, so universal that it became as vital as breathing and as handy as a handkerchief.

The growth of the smartphone market is due to the astonishing uniqueness of the device. Unlike any telephone ever invented, it has an entirely new name which describes its singular position as THE as a communications device of the day.

There are currently scores of smartphone models from the four biggest cellular phone manufacturers worldwide, excluding knockoffs and imitations (of questionable quality and origin) from Asia. While the cell phone and the smartphone are essentially both hand-held wireless telephones to allow one to communicate with anyone anywhere in the world so easily and so inexpensively, smartphones occupy their own unassailable niche. Smart-phones are basically hand-held, pocket computers with features and capabilities far and away more superior to their older cellular phone cousins.

The future of the smartphone remains awesomely bright, as technologies it thrust into the spotlight are further perfected such as its multi-touch screen that dispensed with the keyboard and its walk-around computer feature that makes smart-phones so updatable.

  • HTC Sensation XL with Audio Beats

After the HTC Sensation XE, here is another model produced by the Taiwanese manufacturer that comes with Beats Audio. We are talking about HTC Sensation XL, the smartphone everyone says is the Android Gingerbread version of HTC Titan. Its huge 4.7-inch touchscreen has a S-LCD matrix of 480×800 pixels.

We are presenting you a list of specifications for the new HTC Sensation XL.

    Screen: 4.7”, 480×800, S-LCD
    Chipset: Qualcomm MSM8255
    CPU: 1.5 MHz, single core
    RAM: 768 MB
    Internal memory: 16 GB
    Expandable memory: No
    Operating system: Android 2.3 Gingerbread
    Interface: HTC Sense UI 3.5
Photo camera: 8 megapixels, BSI sensor, 28 mm, autofocus, LED
    Shooting: 720p
    Front camera: 1,3 megapixels
    3G Connectivity: HSDPA 14,4 Mbps
    Battery: 1600 mAh
    Dimensions: 132.5 x 70.7 x 9.9 mm
    Weight: 162.5 g

Big phones are not for everyone, and HTC Sensation XL is definitely a big and relatively heavy smartphone. We expected to find the 540×960 pixels resolution on this phone, but the manufacturer has chosen a slightly smaller one. After reading the specifications we noticed they are very similar to another recently announced smartphone, iPhone 4S. The new Sensation has a similar 8 MP Backlit sensor (BSI) and the lens offers an equivalent opening of 28mm.

HTC Sensation XL was especially created for music enthusiasts. The phone has audio output as well as support from Beats Audio. It also comes with a pair of headphones especially designed for it, called UrBeats. Interestingly, when a pair of UrBeats headphones is connected, the phone recognizes and activates a special audio profile.

The manufacturer will include the HTC Watch application that allows downloading or streaming thousands of movies and TV shows.

HTC Sensation XL will be available on the European market starting from November.

  • Steve Jobs Dies at 56

Steve Jobs, the hero from Silicon Valley, died at the age of 56 years of pancreatic cancer. Passionate, brilliant and irreplaceable in the consciousness of fans and investors, co-founder of Apple dared to defy the rules and to revolutionize an entire industry.

Steve Jobs is the one who brought the entrepreneurship spirit in Silicon Valley, after he quit school to start his own company in 1976. Together with Steve Wozniak he founded Apple in a garage, without having any technical or entrepreneurial experience.

"Michelle and I are saddened to learn of the passing of Steve Jobs. Steve was among the greatest American inventors – brave enough to think differently, bold enough to believe he could change the world, and talented enough to do it," said U.S. President Barack Obama.

But Jobs was not only a visionary but also a capable director, who built the second most valuable company in the world after Exxon Mobil. Under the leadership of Jobs, Apple has become to dominate the digital age, initially by Macintosh computers and later by the iPod, iPhone and iPad.

With every new product, Apple provokes its opponents – IBM on the hardware side, Microsoft in operating systems, Sony on portable media devices and Google in the smartphones battle.

The first attack launched by Jobs was the Apple II computer in 1977, a device that resonated with the small consumers' needs and which has created an alternative to IBM's solutions, the largest computer manufacturer in the world. Later, in 1983, Macintosh was born.

"We versus IBM" was the message behind the TV commercials announcing at that time the Mac computer. The 60-second spot was aired once during the 1984 Super Bowl edition.

But in 1985, Jobs resigned after an internal struggle for power. He decided to give birth to a new company, NeXT Computer, also buying a digital animation studio from the filmmaker George Lucas. The studio later became what is now known as Pixar. Finally, Steve Jobs returned to Apple.

    Magic and excitement
His work has not only reduced to think about leading products and to lead a company from the position of CEO. He created an aura around the Apple devices by the unique way he presented them in front of consumers. We are talking about launching new products. Jobs was preparing intensely for each such event, organized either in Apple’s campus in Cupertino or in San Francisco. He repeated his presentations until he was convinced that the performance is strong enough to create excitement among consumers and even obsession.

In the previous quarter of Jobs’ resignation, Apple's sales increased by 82% to the record of $ 28.6 billion, the company being valued at $ 328.8 billion.

According to former subordinates, friends and associates, all this success is also due to Jobs’ stubbornness, seen by many as being obsessed by control.

"Steve Jobs is like a campfire," said Neil Sims, in an interview in 2008. "Everyone wants to be close enough to stay warm, but nobody wants to get close enough to get burned," said the former collaborator of Jobs.

Born in San Francisco on February 24, 1955, Steve Jobs, on his real name Steven Paul, discovered in 2003 that has a neuroendocrine tumor, a rare form of pancreatic cancer. 7 years ago he underwent a successful surgery that removed the pancreatic tumor and in the coming years, Jobs began to reveal details about his health. In late August, Apple's Steve Jobs announced his resignation, he being replaced as CEO by Tim Cook.

Jobs' wealth was estimated at by Bloomberg at $ 6.7 billion. His 7.4% stake in Disney worth $ 4.4 billion and the 5.5 million shares in Apple were valued at $ 2.1 billion.

The echo of a regretted loss
Among the personalities who expressed their regret for the death of Steve Jobs are included Rupert Murdoch, Mark Zuckerberg, Michael Dell and Larry Page.

Bill Gates, co-founder and President of Microsoft, said: “The world rarely sees someone who has had the profound impact Steve has had, the effects of which will be felt for many generations to come. For those of us lucky enough to get to work with him, it’s been an insanely great honor. I will miss Steve immensely.”

Rupert Murdoch, CEO News Corporation, said: "Today, we lost one of the most influential thinkers, creators and entrepreneurs of all time. Steve Jobs was simply the greatest CEO of his generation. While I am deeply saddened by his passing, I'm reminded of the stunning impact he had in revolutionizing the way people consume media and entertainment. My heart goes out to his family and to everyone who had the opportunity to work beside him in bringing his many visions to life."

Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of, said on his wall: “Steve, thank you for being a mentor and a friend. Thanks for showing that what you build can change the world. I will miss you.”

Arnold Schwarzenegger, former US Governor of California, has also posted a message on Twitter saying: “Steve lived the California Dream every day of his life and he changed the world and inspired all of us.“

https://smartphone.biz-news.com/news/tags/en_US/Michael Dell, founder and CEO ofDELL Inc. has also declared: "Today the world lost a visionary leader, the technology industry lost an iconic legend and I lost a friend and fellow founder. The legacy of Steve Jobs will be remembered for generations to come. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and to the Apple team.”

Larry Page, CEO Google, said about Steve Jobs: “I am very, very sad to hear the news about Steve. He was a great man with incredible achievements and amazing brilliance. He always seemed to be able to say in very few words what you actually should have been thinking before you thought it. His focus on the user experience above all else has always been an inspiration to me. He was very kind to reach out to me as I became CEO of Google and spend time offering his advice and knowledge even though he was not at all well. My thoughts and Google’s are with his family and the whole Apple family.”

Steve Case, AOL founder, said on Twitter: “I feel honored to have known Steve Jobs. He was the most innovative entrepreneur of our generation. His legacy will live on for the ages."

Dick Costolo, CEO Twitter, wrote down on the micro blogging platform: “Once in a rare while, somebody comes along who doesn’t just raise the bar, they create an entirely new standard of measurement."

Bog Iger, CEO Walt Disney Co., says Steve Jobs was a great friend and a reliable adviser. "Steve Jobs was a great friend as well as a trusted advisor. His legacy will extend far beyond the products he created or the businesses he built. It will be the millions of people he inspired, the lives he changed, and the culture he defined. Steve was such an 'original,' with a thoroughly creative, imaginative mind that defined an era. Despite all he accomplished, it feels like he was just getting started. With his passing the world has lost a rare original, Disney has lost a member of our family, and I have lost a great friend. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Laurene and his children during this difficult time.”

Our editorial team also expresses its regrets about the death of the one who was Steve Jobs. Rest in peace, Steve!

  • iPhone 5 Arrives Today!

Today is the day when the long-awaited launch of iPhone 5 will take place, during the “Let’s Talk iPhone” event held in Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino, at 10:00am PDT.

The new smartphone is expected to be presented by the new Apple's CEO Tim Cook, but it’s possible that Apple’s founder and former CEO, Steve Jobs, will make his appearance at this much-coveted event.

Apple hopes to produce five, maybe six million units in October, and by the end of the year to reach the impressive number of 22 million.

According to sources inside the company, cited these days by international media, the new iPhone 5 would feature a 4-inch retina display, with a resolution of 960×640 pixels, 1 GB RAM and a new A5 Dual Core processor of 1.4 GHz, 60% faster than the one used on iPhone 4. Apple’s new product is expected to have an 8-megapixel camera, capable of HD recording in 1080p.

The new smartphone would also include the iCloud technology, which allows user to store music, movies and other files, that can be accessed remotely. In addition, the new iPhone 5 would have the possibility of being charged wirelessly.

The same sources said that iPhone 5 will be available in only two versions, black and white, of 16 and 32 GB respectively. The pricing would start from $639, according to a screen capture that represents a mock-up post which “came to surface” on the telecom operator’s website, Cincinnati Bell.

Interestingly, Apple representatives might launch today a cheaper version too, called iPhone 4S, which will cost only $99. This one will have a 3.5-inch display, a 5-megapixel camera and A5 Dual Core processor, according to the rumors.

What the market expects and what Apple has to win

Brian White, analyst at the financial intermediation company Ticonderoga, believes the demand will be so big that Apple might establish a new sales record by launching iPhone 5, after its predecessor has sold in 1.7 million units in the first three days of presence in stores. The analyst also said that he expects the new model to have a casing similar with MacBook and that Apple will need to upgrade the speed of its processor in order to face the competition with Samsung Galaxy S II.

Apple has become in the second quarter of this year the producer with the biggest sales of smartphones worldwide. Thus, the company sold 20.34 million units in the second quarter, surpassing Nokia, which was leader in smartphones sales in the first quarter with over 24 million units.

Even though Apple became leader, the most significant increase in units sold was recorded by Samsung, by selling 19.5 million smartphones in the second quarter. Apple has sold only with about 2 million units extra in the second quarter, while taking the leadership was also caused by the huge loss of Nokia.

We think that after today’s launch and by enlarging the supply chain, Apple will definitely maintain its leading position. We also expect the launch of the new generation of iPhones to stimulate the sales of the previous Apple’s models by putting them on sale.

  • Microsoft and Samsung Have a Deal on Windows Phone and Sharing Patents

Microsoft and Samsung have signed an agreement targeting three important goals: developing Windows Phone solutions, distribution of Android devices and exchange of patents. The formalization of this agreement, of a great importance for its content and its strategic value, will undoubtedly lead to significant changes in mobile devices.

    The Pro-Windows Phone Agreement
The two parties have decided to get involved in developing new environmental solutions for Windows Phone, just a few days after the announcement of the first Samsung devices equipped with Windows Phone Mango, which widely opens new horizons for both groups. Microsoft needs manufacturers that ensure the quality, while Samsung is looking for an alternative in avoiding an imbalance generated by favoring the Android operating system.

    The Anti-Android Agreement
Another very interesting move made by the two companies is what concerns the Android devices: Microsoft will receive from Samsung a share of the profits obtained from the sale of each Android smartphone distributed.

It's quite difficult to assess the amount in order to determine whether this sum is close to the $ 5 for each device – amount agreed into the contract signed by Microsoft with HTC.

Another interesting fact is that Samsung has also signed, in this context, on the mention: “Android violates the Microsoft’s intellectual property so that Samsung accepts the payment of a small “fine” in order to continue distribution without problems”.

An excellent move on the chessboard of the biggest players on the market, given that the group in Redmond will receive the more so as its Android rival will be successful, which will definitely lead to a confrontation with the colossus in Mountain View.

    The Agreement on Patents
Even the thorny issue targeting the patents has found the solution in the agreement signed by both parties: Microsoft and Samsung have granted a mutual license for the exchange of strategic patents, so that both groups will be able to develop their projects without the risk of further legal battles.

The content of the agreement puts Google against the wall in the most serious way, but brings to the forefront the possibility of adopting a compromising solution on the issue of patents battle.

Advancing the idea of licensing as a viable solution, through which the intellectual property is being recognized, it is clearly approaching this issue, in the spirit of supporting the innovation and the development in the technology sector.
