  • Grandstream Introduces New HD Enterprise SIP Telephone

    Grandstream has extended the portfolio of its GXP series enterprise SIP telephones with the introduction of the new GXP2110.

    Based on Grandstream’s broadly interoperable SIP stack, “the GXP2110 SIP telephone delivers superior HD audio quality for crystal clear voice communications, packed IP telephony features and integrated Web applications, as well as support for highly flexible XML customization and strong security protection,” as the company says.

    The new GXP2110 SIP phone comes standard with HD handset and high performance full duplex speakerphone, a broad range of voice codecs, dual network ports with integrated PoE, 4 line keys, 3 soft keys, 18 programmable BLF keys, 5-way conferencing, large 240×120 backlit graphical LCD with 8-level grayscale, multiple languages, large phone book and call log (2,000 records), automated provisioning using TR-069 and encrypted XML file, extension module expandability, and a number of integrated Web applications such as real-time local weather, stock, currency, RSS news, etc.

    The company informed that in the near future, more advanced Web applications will continue to be integrated via FREE firmware upgrade and an open Web service API will also be provided for advanced custom enterprise/Web application development. Grandstream plans to continue to expand the GXP phone series with new models during the rest of this year.

  • Leading Technology Companies Announce HD Voice Initiative in the U.K.

    XConnect, Polycom, BroadSoft and Dialogic announced an initiative to promote the adoption of high-definition voice by service providers in the United Kingdom.

    Through workshops and cooperative communication and marketing, the HD initiative is designed to raise awareness and educate service providers about the benefits of HD voice and help them resolve implementation challenges.

    As part of the initiative, XConnect announced that the XConnect Global HD Voice Federation is now open to HD voice-enabled service providers globally, following its successful launch in the United States.

    First to join from the U.K. are service providers Simwood, SureVoIP and thevoicefactory.

    The federation enables the exchange of HD voice calls among all participants, all interconnecting through XConnect’s carrier hub and routing through phone-number lookups via its carrier ENUM registry.

    The companies joining XConnect in the initiative are market leaders in their sectors of the HD voice ecosystem. Polycom set an early stake in the ground through its SoundStation IP conference phones and SoundPoint desktop phones featuring Polycom HD Voice technology. BroadSoft is the leading global provider of IP-based communications services to the telecommunications industry. Dialogic is a prominent provider of multimedia and signaling technologies and platforms.

    HD voice enables users to experience clearer, higher-quality and more effective voice communication through the use of wideband codecs on IP networks. However, in most cases, to benefit from improved sound quality, callers must be on the same network. XConnect says they have established the HD federation to allow cross-network support for HD voice and potentially for multimedia IP-based services, such as presence and video.

    “The U.K. is ripe for HD voice due to increasing migration to IP and the quest among service providers to differentiate their offerings and deliver greater value to their customers,” said XConnect CEO Eli Katz.

    He added, “We are delighted to have facilitated the world’s first cross-network international HD voice calls via a federation – a step that paves the way for global mass-market adoption of HD voice.”

    Explaining why his company has joined the HD federation, thevoicefactory CEO Martin Sims said: “We realise that to compete effectively where broadband is a given, we have to move ahead of the pack.   • Goober Introduces New HD Voice and 6-Way Video Conferencing Solution

    Goober Networks, a Unified Communications provider, announced goober 3.0 as a public beta*, a new collaboration solution that includes multi-protocol instant messaging, HD Voice to landlines and cell phones and 6-way video conferencing calls to PCs including Windows and Macintosh.

    goober 3.0 delivers its HD VoIP calling across multiple PCs, including Windows and Macintosh, and the iPhone and iPad with gooberVoIP, which works over Wi-Fi and 3G networks.

    It delivers HD voice quality from 8-16 kilohertz and is able to support video conferencing resolutions from 720 to full HD. No additional hardware is required by the service provider or the end user, and the software-only client can be downloaded for free.

    It supports 227 countries, offering HD VoIP calling worldwide. According to Goober, their flat rates are “versatile and flexible”, offering an average per-minute price “that’s 25-50 percent less expensive than any other VoIP provider.” Calls in the US and Canada are $.01 USD per minute.

    “Goober 3.0 is compatible with today’s 100 million VoIP subscribers worldwide, the 1.6 billion people projected to use IM services by 2012 and the projected 1.9 billion email users by 2013, plus the growing population of social networking and instant messaging sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, GoogleTalk, Jabber, ICQ, MSN, QQ, Yahoo and AOL,” the company said.

    *The current beta version offers 4-way video conferencing; however, the final public release of goober 3.0 will support a record-setting 6-way video conferencing capability.

  • GIPS HD Voice to Power LG FMC VoIP Solution

    Global IP Solutions announced that it has been selected by LG Mobile to provide HD voice for its Fixed Mobile Convergence solution.

    FMC allows telecom operators to combine fixed telephony, cellular telephony and broadband into unified end-user services. The aim is to provide both services with a single phone, which could switch between networks ad hoc. Several industry standardisation activities have been completed in this area such as the Voice call continuity (VCC) specifications defined by the 3GPP.

    Typically, these services rely on Dual Mode Handsets, where the customers’ mobile terminal can support both the wide-area (cellular) access and the local-area technology (for VoIP). However, an alternative approach achieves FMC over 3G mobile networks – eliminating the requirement for Dual Mode. LG SU210

    Last month LG announced the KH3900 JoyPop, the company’s first FMC phone.

    LG Electronics added HD Voice capabilities to its FMC application by integrating GIPS VoiceEngine Mobile, which includes advanced acoustic echo cancellation (AEC) technology. “Good AEC implementation is critical to improve quality of voice calls on mobile devices,” according to LG.

    The company also said that GIPS’ strong local support and expertise team in South Korea ensured a smooth implementation of voice processing technology in their smartphone model SU210/KU2100/LU2100 for FMC solution.

    LG will be initially selling this product to service providers, starting with the South Korea market.

    According to GIPS’ CEO Emerick Woods, implementing GIPS HD voice technology offers service providers assurances that network, bandwidth and delay issues will be overcome.

    GIPS has already enabled HD Voice and Video Chat to the iPad, iPhone as well as to the Android mobiles.

  • Phone.com and Turbobridge Partner to Offer HD Conferencing to Businesses

    Phone.com and TurboBridge are partnering to make a HD telephone audio conferencing service available to Phone.com’s installed user base. This new HD phone service launch comes 3 months after Phone.com introduced its own HD Business Phone service.

    TurboBridge has also launched its own HD audio conferencing service, which is claimed to be “the world’s first High Definition audio conferencing service.” It is powered by the company’s patent-pending TurboSound technology and offers HD audio combined with standard business conferencing features such as call recording, support for up to 250 conference participants, and lecture and Q&A modes.

    The company claim that its service offers more access methods than any other conferencing service in the world, providing features such as direct connectivity for IP PBX’s and IP telephone handsets via a public SIP URI. The service can be accessed through any IP method (Skype, SIP or TurboPhone).

    Phone.com and TurboBridge say they are partnering to give Phone.com customers their own dedicated conference access number as well as speed dial access from their Phone.com Virtual Office telephone handsets to their own dedicated conference bridges.

    In addition, the companies assure that those Phone.com customers who have the new HD Voice Polycom HD phones will be able to enjoy their conference calls in “crystal clear HD quality audio.”

    Phone.com will initially offer the enhanced TurboBridge conferencing service to its customers free of charge, further reinforcing its “all included” philosophy when it comes to bundling and selling services.

  • GIPS Enables HD Voice and One-Way Video Chat to the iPad

    Global IP Solutions announced the availability of high-definition and Super-wideband Voice as well as one-way Video Conferencing/Chat capabilities for iPad developers, powered by GIPS VideoEngine Mobile.

    According to GIPS, its VideoEngine Mobile supplies iPad developers with “a simple to integrate, high-level software API that contains the complex video conferencing/video chat capabilities into applications running on Apple’s iPad operating system.”

    As video access becomes available from Apple, GIPS VideoEngine will support two-way video chat/conferencing.

    “With over 600,000 unit sales of the iPad to date, demand for this device is clearly continuing to grow,” said GIPS’ Chief Marketing Officer Joyce Kim.

    “With the unique experience that a device like the iPad can deliver, it is imperative that the overall quality exceed all expectations and GIPS is proud to offer HD and Super HD voice and video for the iPad and other mobile devices.”

    Roopam Jain, Frost & Sullivan analyst said, “GIPS technology is becoming increasingly significant with the growth in IP traffic as it offers HD voice and video communication capabilities that adjusts dynamically to available bandwidth on Wi-Fi or cellular networks,” said.

    He added that the introduction of devices like the iPad will greatly increase wide scale voice and video communications beyond corporate boundaries.

    GIPS mobile technology is already available on the iPad, Android, iPhone, Symbian and Windows Mobile operating systems.

    Global IP Solutions, a provider of HD voice and video processing solutions, announced yesterday another first-to-market with GIPS VideoEngine for Android, which provides mobile developers the vital building blocks for integrating video conferencing/video chat into applications running Google’s Android mobile operating system.

    Mobile video application revenue is expected to double worldwide over the next four years to $2.42 billion, with much of the growth taking place this year, according to U.K.-based research firm Screen Digest.

    According to Joyce Kim, GIPS’ Chief Marketing Officer, mobile applications are becoming more and more sophisticated and by providing HD voice and video capabilities inside their applications, GIPS customers continually differentiate themselves to lead the mobile application market.

    “GIPS continues to innovate for mobile application developers by offering the ability to incorporate high-quality voice and video communications without having to worry about the complex challenges of wireless networks,” he said.

    Now with GIPS VideoEngine Mobile, developers can integrate the real-time video technology overcoming the multiple issues intrinsic to IP networks and devices. “By dealing with obstacles such as delay, packet loss, bandwidth limitations and echo; GIPS VideoEngine Mobile ensures video conversations dynamically adjust with Wi-Fi or 3G cellular network conditions maintaining great caliber video,” the company claims.

    “GIPS VideoEngine is capable of running on a wide variety of smartphone devices globally,” said Ronald Gruia, Frost & Sullivan’s Principal Analyst of Emerging Telecom.

    “Android is becoming the fastest growing operating system and with the addition of Android video support from GIPS, application developers can utilize established real-time video expertise without the need for heavy R&D investment to offer real time voice and video capabilities.”

    GIPS VideoEngine Mobile is available on Android, iPhone and Windows Mobile OS platforms.

    Global IP Solutions announced the availability of video chat technology for iPhone developers to incorporate video conferencing/video chat into their mobile applications.

    According to the company, with GIPS VideoEngine Mobile, iPhone developers can rapidly integrate high quality real-time video chat or multi-point video conferencing into iPhone applications that resolves the issues related to IP networks such as delay, jitter and echo.

    “iPhone developers are at the forefront of cutting-edge mobile applications, and with such fierce competition, it’s incredibly important to offer consumers a robust application that delivers a great quality experience,” said Joyce Kim, GIPS’ Chief Marketing Officer.

    Ira Weinstein, analyst and partner at Wainhouse Research, said “GIPS VideoEngine allows application developers to support two-way video chat on a variety of IP devices.”

    The addition of iPhone support to the GIPS stable of products allows solution providers and mobile carriers to provide videoconferencing, including one-way video and two-way synchronized audio, to an even larger audience.

    As iPhone market share continues to grow rapidly with more than three billion application downloads in nearly 80 countries, application developers can rapidly build and deploy video chat applications that overcome typical mobile constraints such as packet loss, bandwidth constraints, background noise and lip synchronization.

  • XConnect Offers Trial of High-Definition Calling

    XConnect announced a trial of the first IP peering federation specifically for service providers capable of offering high-definition voice services.

    The trial, open to qualified operators, waives sign-up and monthly fees for its April-June duration. “Multiple providers using the G.722 wideband codec will be able to test the interoperability, scalable interconnection, reliability and support of XConnect federation services,” says the company.

    High-definition voice is being adopted increasingly by fixed, mobile and Web 2.0 telecom service providers, as it delivers a much richer audio experience than the PSTN makes possible.

    Using wideband codecs, HD achieves a wider frequency range, providing almost the clarity of face-to-face conversation.

    However, for HD to work across networks, the entire call path and endpoints themselves must support high definition. According to Eli Katz, XConnect CEO, the mass-market adoption of high-definition voice and other new IP services demands “trusted, scalable cross-network interconnection.”

    “Service providers are eager for a solution. We look forward to working with the industry to help bring the benefits of HD voice to these operators and the consumer and enterprise markets they serve,” he said.

    Jeff Rodman, Polycom co-founder and CTO, said, “Because voice is the most critical way that we communicate, the significantly improved sound quality of HD voice is an important step in making communication clearer and more effective.”

    Trial participants will form a private peering community under the Private Alliance feature of XConnect’s Global Alliance, which combines ENUM-registry and multimedia interconnection hub services. Supporting multiple protocols and codecs, the Global Alliance enables new IP services, including HD voice, to be delivered across networks.

    Global IP Solutions announced support for a mobile operating system, allowing Android mobile application developers to quickly create applications with HD voice inside. Building first-rate VoIP-enabled clients is now possible with GIPS VoiceEngine Mobile.

    GIPS VoiceEngine allows Android developers to build VoIP-enabled applications that offer HD voice, while tackling all the typical IP network issues – such as delay, jitter, packet loss, bandwidth constraints, noise and echo.

    VoiceEngine family consists of VoiceEngine PC (voice processing solution optimized for softphone applications on PC platforms), VoiceEngine Mobile (adds VoIP capabilities to mobile applications; includes echo cancellation technology designed for difficult mobile environments), VoiceEngine ATA (enables residential gateways with VoIP capabilities) and VoiceEngine IP Phone (delivers suite of voice processing technology to IP Phone manufacturers).

    GIPS also announced that Nimbuzz, a free mobile social messaging application, will be the first customer to offer HD voice (VoIP) on Android phones using GIPS voice mobile solution.

    “We’re thrilled that Nimbuzz will be GIPS’ first customer to deploy their application on Android mobile phones. Nimbuzz continues to offer their users a distinctive unified social messaging application that connects popular social and instant messenger networks into one simple, user-friendly offering,” added Hagen.

    GIPS already offers mobile versions of its voice engine to developers on the iPhone and Symbian platforms.

    With nearly 3 billion users worldwide, the mobile phone has become the most personal and ubiquitous communications device. Research firm Gartner has predicted that Android will become the second most popular smartphone by 2012 with 14.5 percent market share and iPhone with 13.7 percent market share.
