  • New enterprise solutions in iOS 8

New enterprise solutions in iOS 8

    ios-8-enterprise

Not more than 48 hours ago, Apple announced the introduction of the much awaited iOS 8, which comes with a number of improvements. Interesting to note is the Enterprise that is build on the new IT model that has significantly improved the way users are informed on how their devices are managed, configured and restricted.

    Stronger Security

Even more interesting to note is the fact that iOS 8 comes with an upgraded and even more powerful Enterprise-grade security. Apple has expanded data protection to more apps and upgraded their mail encryption technology, too.

In addition to third-party apps and mail protection, iOS 8 now also offers passcode protection to other apps like Contacts, Reminders, Notes, Calendar, and Messages.

Users can also opt to use the S/MIME feature to encrypt and sign individual messages. This in turn ensures greater mail messages security.

New Productivity and Time Saving Features

With iOS 8, users can create and save automatic email replies that help save time. They can also manage busy inboxes by flagging messages, marking them as unread or read for better organization. Users can also designate certain mails as VIP so that they are sent directly to the VIP box for priority purposes. It is also possible to set the mailbox to mark external addresses in red for security purposes.

Using the calendar, users can also view meeting availability of their colleagues and friends. The calendar is able to show our friends availability and when setting a meeting, we can therefore put it in a time that is most convenient to everyone.

iOS 8 also gives us the power to push PDF, iBooks, and ePub documents to user devices using MDM (mobile device management) tools. We can also remove the materials remotely when you no longer need them.

Finally, with iOS 8 we can wirelessly connect our iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch to Apple TV (peer-to-peer connection), without having to first connect to the organization’s network. This then means that we can share or present our work even when offline.

  • UC Desktop Prices Drop in Q1

Average selling prices in the UC desktop market, which has been holding steady over the past six months, dropped slightly in Q1 2009.

This weakening indicates the growing competitive nature of the industry, according to the authors of a Synergy Research Group report on the global market for collaborative applications.

The study found vendor sales down generally for the first quarter of 2009 in both the enterprise and SMB market segments.

It showed that collaboration application vendors had sales of USD $913.3 million for the first quarter.

Avaya, Cisco and Siemens were the top three vendors in the enterprise category, and ShoreTel, Cisco and Avaya lead the SMB category.

While Jeremy Duke, CEO, Synergy, said these companies are in strong strategic positions in their respective markets, the top six vendors in both segments experienced quarter-over-quarter sales declines.

There is also a growing interest in managed UC offerings as small business suffer decreased credit availability.

Interesting trends spotted in the Q1 2009 and analyzed in the Synergy report include:

    • Social Networking continues to be a hot topic of discussion as UC vendors look to interface or incorporate Social Networking applications into their UC offerings.
    • Conferencing bucked the decreasing trend in collaborative applications by growing revenues 7 per cent quarter-over-quarter. This is on top of a 5 per cent growth in revenues in Q4. Conferencing (web, video and audio) still shows good growth as corporations continue to spend on technologies that are perceived to have relatively short-term returns on investment and a positive effect on employee efficiencies.
  • VOICECON: 8×8 Intros Enterprise Version of Hosted IP PBX Service

8×8 today announced the availability of an enterprise version of its hosted IP PBX phone service.

The solution is intended for deployment in larger organizations located in either a single building, a campus environment or distributed across multiple locations.

Called 8×8 Virtual Office Enterprise, it is the latest generation of 8×8’s broadband agnostic hosted IP PBX business phone solutions.

Bryan Martin, 8×8 chairman and CEO, said that unlike premise-based PBX phone systems that require a significant financial investment plus management and maintenance resources, the business phone solution delivers advanced PBX calling features combined with cost-effective IP dial tone service.

He said this eliminated the need for expensive on-site equipment.

"Core enhancements to the Virtual Office hosted PBX platform and additional redundancy in our network now enable us to offer this solution to larger organizations that are analyzing the cost and functionality of their current telecommunications infrastructure alongside a requirement for high quality, availability and redundancy from this mission critical service," he said.

8×8 recently upgraded its service infrastructure, deploying a new triple redundant architecture across three independent data centers with each data center connected to redundant IP access providers.

Martin said this new architecture allows for failure of any software component, server, cluster or even a complete data center failure without affecting service to the end customer.

  • Gizmo5 CEO Challenges Skype For SIP

The CEO of Gizmo5 Michael Robertson has responded to last week’s announcement of Skype for SIP by posting a comparison (see below) of the new service and his own company’s OpenSky.

While welcoming Skype’s initiative, he described it as a "vaporware announcement" with "murky pricing details".

Writing on his blog, Robertson said he has been a vocal advocate for open standards, both in music with my company MP3.com and in VOIP with Gizmo5.

He said open standards have always give consumers more choices and ultimately better value.

"V0IP standards got a huge boost this week with two announcements," he said.

Roberston said these were Gizmo5’s launch of its SIP for Skype service called OpenSky, which lets any SIP device call Skype and receive their Skype calls, and Ebay’s announcement of Skype for SIP.

"These announcements are a huge boost for SIP as the open standard which will let calls move freely from any calling device or network," he said.

"It’s great to see Skype inching towards a more interoperable world. Even if this is a vaporware announcement at least their heart is in the right direction."

Robertson compared Skype For SIP with Skype for Asterisk, announced last year, saying that Skype’s business offering is not yet available and pricing details are murky.

In response to Robertson’s blog comments, Skype said its SIP offering is available now.

While there are other details that will undoubtedly be challenged by Skype, Robertson’s riposte will certainly give any enterprise pondering the services something to chew over.

  • Blackberry Offered As Pay-As-You-Go

Orange UK is to offer a pay-as-you-go Blackberry – the first carrier in Europe to launch a PAYG RIM device.

The move underlines RIM’s intention to re-position itself as a provider of handsets that appeal to the consumer market as well as its traditional enterprise stronghold.

The smartphone will be an exclusive indigo-colored BlackBerry 8120 that will cost £145.

An estimated two-thirds of UK mobile customers use PAYG.

To take up the Orange offer customers must take out one of the operator’s existing PAYG Animal packages before taking a PAYG BlackBerry Internet Service for just £5 per month, on a monthly rolling subscription.

This will give them access to email, messaging and the web.

An Orange statement said the new offering was a result of the growing demand for a BlackBerry smartphone with PAYG service.

The BlackBerry Pearl 8120 has a 2 megapixel camera with LED flash, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and media player.

  • Credit Crisis Will Favor Mobiles Over Fixed Voice

Companies are more likely to give staff a mobile phone than upgrade a fixed voice system.

That’s one of the findings of a report by Analysys Mason, which concludes that mobile substitution will have a far bigger impact on fixed enterprise voice spend than the credit crunch.

The adviser to the telecoms, IT and media industries predicts a 15 per cent decline in fixed voice spend next year as a result of mobile substitution.

In its report, Fixed–mobile convergence in enterprise voice in Europe: forecasts 2008–2013, Analysys Mason notes that fixed voice providers will find that the global financial crisis will reduce enterprise fixed voice spend by 1–2 per cent.

Ultimately, however, mobile substitution will have a far bigger impact on enterprise voice spend.

The report’s author, Margaret Hopkins, said enterprises were finding it cheaper to give staff mobile phones for all their calls than to put a new VoIP phone on a desk.

“In addition to this, the financial crisis will increase pressure to conserve cash and make it even less likely that enterprises will install a VoIP PBX when their old phone system ceases to be supported by the vendors,” she said.

Other key findings from the report include:

    • Spend on FMC services, where the mobile phones are seamlessly integrated into the enterprise voice system, will grow at a CAGR of 41% between 2008 and 2013, albeit from a low base, while spend on standalone mobile and fixed voice services will decline by 9% and 15% respectively over the period.
    • The economic downturn will boost demand for hosted voice services that eliminate the need for infrastructure investment and deliver short-term cash benefits.
    • Because mobile call prices for enterprise customers have fallen to the point where there is little incentive to push calls onto the fixed network, dual-mode cellular Wi-Fi phones are losing their appeal.
    • Enterprises are becoming increasingly aware of the benefits of presence management systems, partly as a result of the arrival of Microsoft OCS, and will start to look for presence information systems for both fixed and mobile phones in new deployments.
  • Internal Cloud Computing Option Avoids Outsourcing Concerns

Data center software provider, Cassatt Corporation, has announced new service and technology offerings to help companies safely realize "internal cloud computing".

Bill Coleman, chairman and CEO of Cassatt Corp, said this was an IT approach that delivers the benefits of cloud computing using the resources that organizations already have inside their data centers.

He said cloud computing offers great promise by having third parties deliver the computing resources needed to run applications as an on-demand service, with a lot of the IT infrastructure invisible to the user.

"However, at this point most IT professionals are not comfortable outsourcing Relevant Products/Services the mission-critical parts of their sensitive internal applications to an external cloud provider," he said.

"They are concerned about availability, vendor lock-in, not having the control they need, and having to rebuild these applications from scratch with proprietary tools running on provider-specific platforms."

To directly address these problems, the updated Cassatt offerings help customers implement cloud-style computing environments using their existing systems, inside the firewalls of their data centers without having to modify their current hardware or software.

Coleman said the resulting "internal cloud" can provide the same operational efficiency, fault tolerance, and energy Relevant Products/Services savings promised by external clouds, but without the worries over security Relevant Products/Services, compliance, lack of control, or the need or delay required to change or replace their current applications.
