  • snom: Drive to Unified Communications Remains Strong

Mike Storella, director of business development at VoIP phone maker snom, believes unified communications is the strongest segment in the communications industry.

As customers look to become leaner and meaner, he stresses the advantages offered by wireless technology, such as WiFi, saying he feels it should be "everywhere".

"Our latest snom VoIP Desk phone 8xx series all do WiFi, I don’t know the percentages but it is drastically less expensive to deploy an all WiFi office eliminating cat5 cable runs and increased Ethernet switch deployments," he said.

Headquartered in Germany, snom has a range of eight VoIP business phones and is a worldwide provider. It works with any platform that uses the SIP protocols for VoIP.

In an interview with TMCnet, Storella said the company has learnt that ROI "rules the day" for customers to make a positive choice to buy a replacement solution for their voice communications.

He said the economic situation hasn’t affected the company’s decisions to invest in markets and products.

"Times might be tough, but it is no time to lose faith that your products solve problems and needs for customers as they try to compete better in their business," he said.

"If our products do what we say they do, customers need them to increase their productivity."

  • VoIP Phones Help Polycom To $ 1.1 Billion Revenue Record

Polycom has announced record revenues of USD $1.1bn for 2008.

The company said VoIP phones continued to be one of its fastest growing product lines in 2008, as customers put out dollars to implement a "money saving solution".

Robert Hagerty, Polycom’s president and CEO, said the revenue figure represented growth of 50 per cent for the full year and generated a record USD $165 million of positive operating cash flow.

He highlighted Polycom’s line of desktop VoIP phones as "one of Polycom’s fastest growing product lines".

"Driven by the significant ROI typically achieved through a transition to Voice over IP, many customers are allocating budgets to deploy this money saving solution," he said.

"With Polycom’s IP telephones customers are enjoying HD voice and a level of features and functionality that we believe is unparalleled in the market."

Hagerty said that,as with Polycom’s conference phones, they had a broad array of strategic partnership including Microsoft, Digium, AT&T and Telstra.

He said the sales cycle had lengthened and budget priorities sometimes moved to video collaboration.

"However, we are pleased with the market gains we’ve made in Voice over IP and expect to leverage our Microsoft and other go-to-market relationships in 2009."

  • Snom Favors Italy Over UK For Expansion

The VoIP phone maker and developer Snom Technology is making a push into Italy and opening an office in Milan.

In what could be a barometer of the current state of Europe’s economies, the German company ruled out a move to the UK.

Heike Cantzler, marketing manager for Snom Technology, said both the UK and Italy were considered for the expansion.

She told voip.biz-news that both Italy and the UK had very active Web markets – which had made the decision about where to expand difficult.

Ultimately, concerns over the UK’s economic situation and the perception that the Italian market was more receptive to new technology, tipped the balance in Italy’s favor.

"The financial problems in the UK are worse than in Italy," said Cantzler.

"The UK and US economies have big problems. With the rest of Europe, we are still waiting to see what will happen.

"Maybe next year will be hard but at the moment we do not feel any difference."

Snom develops and manufacturers VoIP telephones based on an open standard for enterprise communications.

It employs 50 people worldwide, with offices in Germany, Italy, the US and China.

In common with other VoIP industry businesses, Cantzler said a recession was likely to benefit Snom as companies sought ways to reduce costs.

She said that as Snom phones can be operated with a large number of compatible IP-PBX that support SIP (Session Initiation Protocol), they offer customers a wider choice for enterprise communication systems.

In October, the Berlin-based company launched the Snom 820, a VoIP business telephone with a high-resolution TFT color display.

Cantzler said the 820 typified Snom’s philosophy of adding as many features to products while keeping prices down.

"The 820 is the only phone worldwide – aside from Microsoft’s phones – that integrates with Microsoft Outlook," she said.

"This is really interesting because the Microsoft phone is one that is very expensive and very difficult to handle. Even Microsoft developers tell us that they use a Snom phone because it’s easier."

    Praise indeed.
