  • iPhone Beats Blackberry in Customer Satisfaction Survey

The iPhone has come top of JD Power’s customer satisfaction study measuring consumer tastes.

The Apple handset ranked highest among smartphone consumers judging five factors: ease of operation, operating system, features, physical design, and battery function.

The only area where the iPhone didn’t score well was for battery life – an issue only too familiar with the devices’ owners.

Overall the iPhone received 791 out of a 1,000-point scale, ahead of LG’s 772 points and Samsung’s 759 points. The trio were the only smartphone to rise above the industry average of 751 points.

Those below the average were mainly companies making Windows Mobile devices, with HTC, Palm and Motorola earning scores of 744, 736 and 659 respectively.

RIM’s BlackBerries also fared significantly lower than Apple with a 739 score.

JD Power said that generally smartphone satisfaction has risen since its last survey in November 2008.

Other findings include the fact that smartphone users send an average of 17 emails a day, and 82 per cent report that they use things like address books and to-do lists to stay organized.

The survey included 2,648 smartphone users who owned their phone for less than two years.

  • Growth Strong In HD Videoconferencing and Telepresence

A third of videoconferencing managers report that the economic crisis is likely to lead to an accelerated deployment of equipment rather than a slowdown.

A survey from Wainhouse Research reports that customers are continuing to invest in "visual collaboration solutions", even in the current economic climate.

It says the two largest drivers for this are travel reduction and improved decision making.

Nearly a quarter of respondents have either deployed telepresence suites or are planning on deploying within one year.

It’s not just full-room telepresence systems that are experiencing growth but videoconferencing solutions generally, including desktop videoconferencing applications.

Wainhouse’s annual survey of videoconferencing end users indicates that in the past year, both interest in and purchases of more advanced visual solutions have increased dramatically.

The results shows that 32 per cent of respondents have systems that can now support 720p HD videoconferencing.

To support these and other unified communications applications, customers are continuing their migration to IP, with users reporting that 76 per cent of video calls now take place on an IP network – up from 66 per cent one year earlier.

In addition, interest in integrating videoconferencing to unified communications platforms has grown significantly, according to the report.

  • HDTV Now In Over A Third Of US Households

HDTV penetration has doubled in the past two years with 34 per cent of US households having at least one high definition television (HDTV) set.

Representing about 40 million households, this figure is set to double again over the next two years, according to consumer research from the Leichtman Research Group.

The findings also showed that 22 per cent of all households purchased a new TV set in the past 12 months.

Of these, 43 per cent of this group spent over USD $1,000 on a new TV.

The results are based on a survey of 1,302 households throughout the US, and are part of a new LRG study, HDTV 2008: Consumer Awareness, Interest and Ownership.

Bruce Leichtman, president and principal analyst for Leichtman Research Group, said while more people than ever before have HDTV sets, educating consumers on HD programming remains an issue.

The survey found that about 18 per cent of individuals with an HDTV continue think that they are watching HD programming, but are not.

“About 40 million US households now have at least one HDTV set, and LRG forecasts that this number will double over the next four years,” he said.

    Other findings include:

    • Combined, 38% of HD owners say that replacing an old/broken set or wanting to buy a new TV set was the most important reason for getting their HDTV – compared to 22% citing picture quality, and 7% the quality of HD programming or the number of HD channels
    • 44% with annual household incomes over $50,000 have an HDTV compared to 20% with annual household incomes under $50,000
    • 33% of HDTV owners have more than one HDTV set, and 25% are likely to get another HDTV set in the next year
    • 9% of HD owners say that they switched multi-channel video providers when they purchased their HDTV
    • 42% of HDTV owners say that they were told how to receive HD programming when they purchased their set
    • LRG estimates that about 58% of all HD households are now watching HD programming from a multi-channel video provider – up from 53% last year.
