Waitan Launches World’s First 1.8” microSATA SSD Ejector

    waitan

Waitan, a designer and manufacturer of military and industrial grade solid state drives, has announced its patent pending 1.8″ microSATA SSD ejector product. The ejector is said to be “the first and the only available in the market of the same kind.” It is designed to operator over -40 ~+85C ambient temperature with high resistance against shock and vibrations, which is “ideal for military and industrial computing applications where 1.8″ microSATA SSD or HDD is deployed.”

The ejector has integrated standard 16 pin microSATA socket that provides robustness and reliability for standard 1.8″ microSATA drives to be inserted and ejected for up to thousands of times.

Also, its integrated SMT type of SATA connectors provides easy-to-use mechanism that allow system manufacturers to solder the ejector on motherboard hassle-free.

Over the past ten years, form factors and interfaces of SSDs have been evolved rapidly. Among them, 1.8″ microSATA is the smallest form factor yet still maintain metal housing from which benefits both compact size and EMC shielding. However, since 1.8″ microSATA does not have mounting hole on its metal housing not like 2.5″ SATA does, many system designers have to choose other small form factors such as half slim SATA or mSATA while suffering EMC issues. But Waitan is now able to supply its unique 1.8″ microSATA ejector to the market so that the system designers can now enjoy the full range benefits of deploying 1.8″ microSATA SSD or HDD drives as system or storage disks.

Some of the major features of the Waitan 1.8″ microSATA ejector includes,

    – Dual propel pedals which provides even and smooth propelling force to eject microSATA drives
    – Ejecting stopper which prevents ejector from damage due to over push of ejecting handler
    – Fish-Spear-Headed fastener which provide easy installation to snap in and fasten the ejector on PCB – Ejecting handler provides easy-to-use mechanism to eject a1.8″ microSATA drives
    – Full length ejecting strip which provides balance of force applied to the microSATA socket and connector area. Hence it prevents both ejector and microSATA device from damage, and it also increases endurance of the ejector and the device.
    – Ejector guiding rail which provides straight line for steel ejector to move back and forth smoothly with even force applied during motion, which further protects ejector and device from damage and to increase endurance for both.

Amazon Launches Cloud Drive SDK For Developers

    amazon-cloud-drive

Amazon has recently made a few changes to its cloud service, giving it more robust capability.

Earlier this year Amazon announced a Cloud Drive option that allowed users unlimited cloud storage and recently the company released an SDK for their cloud storage service that gives developers a chance to build Cloud Drive storage options into their applications.

With this new update app developers can now easily integrate the storage service to their apps.

The SDK is already available for both iOS and Android, so developers can get down to working on their apps without worrying about compatibility.

This update is also beneficial to end-users as they can now easily use Amazon Cloud Drive through their favorite apps.

Amazon says that developers can utilize the new SDK on existing apps, apps they’re developing or even add the integration to new apps.

There are already a handful of Android apps that are already using the SDK and these include Presentations HD Basic, PlanMaker HD Basic, TextMaker HD Basic and A+ Gallery. These are just a few that were highlighted by Amazon but as we speak, more developers could already have integrated this service on their apps.

  • Cloud Storage Vendors Aggressively Slash Prices Again

Since November, the three leading cloud storage vendors have slashed prices for data storage per month, offering massive discounts for the first terabyte. Amazon Web Services reduced prices by up to 28% to 9.5 cents, extending reductions to its nine regional centers. Google Cloud Storage dropped data rates by 30% to 8.5 cents. Microsoft Windows Azure slashed its prices by 12% to 8.5 cents.

Vendors are cutting prices to attract as many early cloud adopters as possible, with the knowledge that switching service provider later might prove to be difficult for customers.

"It's definitely a race, but it's a land grab," said Terri McClure, senior analyst at the Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG). "The race is to the bottom to get more data into the cloud. They are trying to accelerate adoption because the service is very sticky. Once data is in the cloud, it's hard to switch providers."

Steve Zivanic, vice president of marketing at Nirvanix, a San Diego based cloud storage provider, said the three dormant cloud providers keep competing on price because their services are similar.

"If you have no technology differentiation between clouds, then it's the same as disk-drive vendors waging a war for the lowest price per raw drive," said Steve Zivanic, "The key is to wrap advanced storage services around the physical drive and sell business value of that overall service. The price cuts between Amazon, Google and Azure are basically battles for cheap, raw online disk."

An analyst for IT infrastructure and cloud at 451 Research Cloud, Carl Brooks said that while storage prices have come down, the costs of bandwidth, replication, security, compliance and maintenance, make the price of cloud storage high compared to on-premises storage.

"Cloud providers are well over the cost of actually provisioning on-premises storage," said Carl Brooks. "Hard drives are almost a commodity at this point. We have not seen that in the cloud market. The trend behind the price cuts are more about cloud providers trying to get ahead of the trend. They don't want to be undercut by other vendors."

"Amazon, Azure and Google cut prices to continue to be relevant," Brooks said further. "You are going to see price competition for a couple of years, and you will see cloud service providers go out of business.

  • Storage Predictions for 2012: Infiltration of ‘Small Data’ and a New Kind of Cloud

Drobo has released storage industry predictions for the coming year. These predictions are based on the company’s interactions with thousands of customers, analysts and industry luminaries.

"The pace of change in the storage industry is going to accelerate in 2012," said Tom Buiocchi, CEO of Drobo. "Cloud strategies are evolving rapidly, solid-state media will have its day, and Big Data technologies will find their way to 'Small Data' customers. Any vendor with an old school product line is going to learn some new lessons the hard way in 2012."

    Among Drobo's predictions:

    • It’s the end of cloud storage as we know it today.  Pure cloud adoption will become less common than a hybrid approach that tightly integrates public and private cloud architectures with modern on-premise storage systems. This trend will hold true for both home users and small-medium businesses (SMBs). According to recent cloud usage research conducted by Drobo, 96 percent of SMBs (up to 500 employees) report they will store at least 50 percent of their data on-site for a minimum of the next three years. Factors cited included cloud performance, security and reliability concerns. Both businesses and individuals did state that they wanted tighter and more automated integration between their on-site data and their cloud provider. As stated by Buiocchi, "The cloud is going to have one foot on the ground for some time to come."
    • 'Small Data' eclipses Big Data in importance.  Today there is big buzz around Big Data, but the fact of the matter is Big Data is relevant to only the largest of companies and data hoarders—similar to the perspective that only one percent of the population owns 99 percent of the nation’s wealth. It’s the one person, family or business having to navigate the protection and management of their own data that affects the largest group of people: 100 million individuals and small businesses nationwide alone. This is the more pervasive problem (when compared to Big Data), and it highlights a persistent oversight of the entrenched, legacy storage system vendors that focus on the one percent while under-serving the "little guy." The numbers are too big to ignore—while Big Data will continue as a top issue in 2012, it’s the 'Small Data' opportunity that will explode.
    • Consumerization of IT continues as enterprise storage features hit the SMB and home user market.  It happened with PCs years ago and now it’s happening with tablets. In 2012 it will happen with personal and small business storage. Automated data protection, advanced thin provisioning, and powerful data-tiering with solid-state drives (SSD) are among the innovative technologies that entered the enterprise market first, but in 2012 they will further permeate home and small business offices. Will most new home or small office users know how to describe these cool, geeky storage features? Probably not, but they will know that storage has never been so easy to use, reliable and fast. 2012 will be the year that the idea of storage for the rest of us takes on a larger role in our lives, better protecting our rapidly growing digital universe.

  • SanDisk 32GB Flash Card Handles HD Video

SanDisk is offering a new Extreme SDHC card which it claims is the world’s fastest 32GB card – with both the capacity and I/O speed to handle HD video clips.

With a sustained write speed – up to 30 megabits-per-second – the company said it is fast enough to capture a storehouse of up to 160 minutes of full HD (1920×1080) video at a 24Mb/s data transfer rate.

According to SanDisk, the card also is compliant to the SD Association’s new Class 10 specification, which exceeds requirements for today’s high-definition (AVCHD) video recording.

Susan Park, SanDisk director of Retail Product Marketing, said a memory card’s write speed plays a crucial role in the overall system of the camera when taking pictures in rapid succession.

"If a card cannot process data quickly enough, then the burst-mode shooting may pause unexpectedly as the card catches up to the camera," she said.

Burst-mode bottlenecks can lead to missing an important shot, especially at sporting or other fast-motion events, according to Park.

"The market for entry to mid-level DSLR cameras is growing," she said. "This card’s 32GB of storage and fast read/write speeds enable DSLR users to shoot without worrying about storage or speed limitations."

The SanDisk Extreme SDHC 32GB cards will begin shipping worldwide to major retailers in August.

  • WWDC: New iPhone 3Gs Twice as Fast, Video Camera

Apple has unveiled a new version of the iPhone – the iPhone 3Gs – at WWDC 2009.

Among the key improvements are a 3 megapixel camera with autofocus and VGA video capture at 30fps, improved battery life, voice control, a faster processor and 7.2Mbps HSDPA-compatible radio.

The new iPhone 3Gs comes with either 16GB or 32GB of internal storage, doubling the previous offerings of 8GB and 16GB.

It will go on sale June 19 in the US. The 32GB model will be USD $299 and the 16GB model will be USD $199.

iPhone 3Gs will also be available in more than 80 countries in the coming weeks.

Apple is also dropping the price of the iPhone 3G to USD $99 and the iPhone 3G 16GB model to $149 starting immediately.

The latter, USD $50 short of the new 8GB 3Gs model, may not be of great appeal.

The iPhone 3Gs includes the new OS 3.0, which includes over 100 new features such as Cut, Copy and Paste (finally), MMS, Spotlight Search, and landscape keyboard.

The new autofocus camera has a "tap to focus" feature, allowing users to touch the display to select an object or area of interest and the camera automatically re-adjusts focus and exposure.

Although there’s still no flash, Apple has added auto-focus and geotagging support.

Video clips can be edited on the handset by trimming the start and stop points – and then sent by email or MMS and posted to MobileMe or YouTube with just one tap.

The voice control feature in iPhone 3G S offers hands free operation for both iPhone and iPod functions.

These include a command that activates the Genius feature by saying "play more songs like this".

iPhone 3Gs has the OpenGL ES 2.0 standard for high-quality 3D graphics, which should further enhance its gaming reputation.

Battery life has been improved to give five hours of 3G talk time and up to 24 hours of music playback — according to Apple.

Announcing the new handset, Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of WorldWide Product Marketing, said it was on average up to twice as fast as iPhone 3G.

He said it opens web pages quicker and launches applications faster.

"iPhone 3G S is the fastest, most powerful iPhone yet and we think people will love the incredible new features including autofocus camera, video recording and the freedom of voice control," he said.

    Other new features include:

    • digital compass
    • the OS now supports tethering
    • integrated hardware encryption
