  • VOXOFON Launches Mobile VoIP for Palm Pre


    VOXOFON has expanded the availability of its low-cost international calling services by offering a mobile VoIP application for the Palm WebOS platform.

    The application is aimed at the Palm Pre smartphone. VOXOFON plans to make the new application available on the Palm App Catalog later this year.

    After installation the callers can simply click on the VOXOFON icon on the phone screen to place a low-cost international call.

    The application works anywhere the phone has coverage and does not require a Wi-Fi connection. In addition, there are no monthly fees or contracts.

    Beginning at 1.3 cents per minute, with no additional fees, VOXOFON international calling services allow customers to call using their smart phone, computer, land line, or a cell phone.

    VOXOFON has been a leader in providing convenient mobile applications for its VoIP service, beginning with a web application for iPhone that was introduced in the summer of last year.

    In September 2008, VOXOFON was the first to announce an application for the Android platform – one that offered transparent cost optimization for international calls.

    The company followed with an identical application for BlackBerry smartphones in January of this year.

  • Cellcom Israel To Offer HD VoIP-enabled Mobile Calling


    AudioCodes has teamed up with MailVision to offer a mobile soft client (Pico) and a versatile mobile clients’ Distribution Platform to Israel’s leading mobile service provider, Cellcom.

    As a result, Cellcom is to offer a new service called Cellcom Link, which allows roaming subscribers to initiate voice calls and send text messages (SMS) over a Wi-Fi connection, via their current mobile handsets at low rates.

    Leev Lerner, CEO of MailVision, a provider of SIP Mobile Platforms for Wireless and NGN Service Providers, said its Pico Client delivers high voice quality to subscribers allowing them to utilize their personal handset and telephone number when travelling abroad.

    He said the PICO software has the ability to retain a mobile phone’s existing address book contacts, enabling users to use their regular phone interface.

    "Mobile operators are now able to offer an alternative to low cost PC based calls," he said.

    "By selecting to use our advanced mobile VoIP solution platform, Mobile operators can offer roaming end-users the ability to make calls at a significantly reduced rate."

    Adi Cohen, vice president of marketing at Cellcom, said the service is not intended to replace the existing Cellcom Abroad service.

    "Rather (it is) to serve as an additional solution for customers travelling abroad who make many phone calls with Wi-Fi supported devices and would like to cut costs, while retaining their personal cellphone number," he said.

  • Intelecom Launches CoIP Handset Combo


    Intelecom has announced that it has obtained the rights to sell the 1World1Phone mobile phone.

    The VoIP communications provider will sell the handset separately as well as a package with the 1Button to Wi-Fi adapter.

    The latter is a consumer located, VoIP switching device developed by WorldTel Xchange that enables both fixed VoIP (Home phone) and cellular VoIP (CoIP) wireless calling for the individual and commercial enterprise consumer.

    Intelecom said the new phone is 3G, Quad Band compatible and has dual SIM cards and it functions like two phones with an unlocked GSM.

    It also features a removable back so that the batteries can be changed for longer usage when charging facilities are not available.

    1World1Phone is compatible with all the 36 carriers operating in the US. It can also work with all GSM carriers worldwide.

    The phone has a memory of 2 Gigs and the device is capable of supporting 4 Gigs, 8Gigs or16Gigs memory cards. The company plans to sell memory cards and also SIM cards suitable for 130 countries.

    Earlier this year, Intelecom entered into a strategic alliance with WorldTel Xchange which developed the 1Button to Wi-Fi COIP (Cellular Over Internet Protocol) technology which allows it to sell the product.

    It can be used on any cell phone, PDA, BlackBerry or Apple’s iPhone to convert it into a Wi-Fi phone for covering large areas.

    Customers will be entitled to five hours of international calling which comes with the adapter.

    Intelecom also announced its entry into the Web 2.0 and social network arenas by launching a fully monetized green social platform called My Social Income or MSI, where up to 50 per cent of the advertising revenue and the profits received from the sale of its 1 Button to Wi-Fi COIP, 1World 1Phone, Web 2.0 communications and marketing suites will be shared with all its members.

  • Skype Taking Larger Share of International Voice Traffic


    International voice traffic continues to rise – despite the availability of an ever-broader range of substitutes for standard telephone calls.

    Cross-border telephone traffic grew 14 per cent in 2007 and is estimated to have grown 12 per cent in 2008, to 384 billion minutes, according to data from TeleGeography.

    Due to declining call prices, however, revenues have largely been flat.

    But if international telephone traffic is increasing at a modest pace, Skype’s international traffic has soared.

    TeleGeography estimates that Skype’s cross-border traffic grew approximately 41 per cent in 2008, to 33 billion minutes.

    This is equivalent to 8 per cent of combined international telephone plus Skype traffic.

    TeleGeography analyst Stephan Beckert said Skype’s traffic growth has been remarkable.

    "Only five years after its launch, Skype has emerged as the largest provider of cross-border voice communications in the world," he said.

    Not all of Skype’s traffic is a net loss for international carriers.

    Skype’s paid-for ‘Skype Out’ service, which lets users make calls to standard telephones, generated 8.4 billion minutes of calls in 2008.

    Skype relies on wholesale carriers, such as iBasis and Level 3, to connect this traffic to the telephone network.

  • Nimbuzz Bridges iPhone 3G VoIP Gap


    Nimbuzz has today released what it describes as the most comprehensive VoIP application for the iPhone after "quite a few" rejections from Apple.

    Building on its iPhone app launched in November, Nimbuzz users can now make international calls to mobiles and landlines at domestic rates by dialing a local access number available in over 50 countries.

    The Dial-Up VoIP 3G call is then connected to anywhere in the world via Nimbuzz VoIP servers.

    Other new additions include the introduction of a full dial-pad and the ability to make VoIP calls to landlines and mobiles via Skype-Out, and Nimbuzz’s major SIP provider partners including Gizmo5, Vyke, and sipgate over Wifi – effectively turning the iPod touch into an iPhone.

    Nimbuzz can also show users’ available credit on the dial-pad when using Skype Out for phone calls to landlines and mobile phones.

    Another new feature allows Twitter updates via the Personal Message option.

    Free Wi-Fi calls to instant messaging buddies were already available.

    Evert Jaap Lugt, CEO of Nimbuzz, said Nimbuzz’s rapidly growing user base is partly due to its already successful iPhone application.

    "We are a mass-market lifestyle application and are keen to ensure we keep up to date with the needs of the hyper-connected, so this update reflects initial feedback from our users."

  • Truphone Launches Business App Aimed At Halving International Mobile Call Charges


    Truphone announced today that it is launching a Blackberry application that enables business users to make international phone calls from their devices at fixed line rates.

    The company claims that the new Truphone Business app will reduce call charges by at least half.

    Geraldine Wilson, CEO of Truphone, said the company’s global infrastructure meant the savings are available for calls made from the UK to every destination globally.

    "The launch of Truphone Business follows demand for a business solution from our existing customer base," she said.

    "The proposition is extremely compelling, particularly in this economic climate.

    "Companies are keen to cut costs but find that an increasingly mobile and global workforce need to make international calls from mobile devices as a part of day-to-day business.
    "Truphone solves that problem by providing international calls from mobiles at fixed line rates."

    Last month, Truphone unveiled its plans for a single-SIM, multi-country mobile service that will enable users to make calls in supported countries at local rates.

    Truphone Business is pushed to each device via the BlackBerry server, instantly activating the service on the handset.

    Specifically designed for business use, the service also offers centralised monthly billing with itemised and departmental reporting.

    The app is available at two rates; TruStandard and TruSaver, for a monthly subscription of GBP £2.50 and £5.00 respectively.

  • JAJAH Announces Advanced Solutions for WinMo, BlackBerry and Symbian


    JAJAH is to offer new services enabling VoIP calls to be made either via WiFi or over the cellular network for Windows Mobile, BlackBerry and Symbian users.

    They are being offered as white label solution to enable carriers and non-carriers to launch the service under their own brand.

    The new services follow JAJAH’s recent release of a solution for the iPod Touch, which enables it to be used for phone calls.

    JAJAH said its platform has everything a company would need to launch the service immediately under their own brand.

    This includes the application itself, plus the entire suite of management services, from termination of the calls and quality control, right through to billing and processing payments in 200 countries around the world.

    For BlackBerry users, the application adds ‘JAJAH Call’ to the phonebook menu.

    JAJAH for Symbian gives anyone with a phone running Symbian s60 the ability to choose whether international calls route over the JAJAH IP network or the standard cellular network.

    The application automatically detects the presence of a WiFi network and offers the choice to use JAJAH when a long distance phone number is dialed (either manually or via the address book).
