  • Service Offers To Double iPod Capacity To 240GB


    A US Company has started an iPod upgrading service that can expand an iPod to 240GB – or 48,000 tracks.

    Apple’s largest iPod is the 120GB classic which allows up to 24,000 tracks to be stored.

    While this would seems sufficient for most users, it seems it’s not enough for everyone.

    Rapid Repair offers to remove the old, "small" Apple HDD and replace it with a more advanced but same-sized 1.8" Toshiba 240GB storage unit.

    The operation also invalidates the Apple guarantee, according to SmallBusiness.

    To double the MP3 player’s capacity will cost USD $300 plus postage.

    Rapid Repairs says it is looking to extend its services to Zunes and other MP3 machines.

  • Are optical Discs a Viable Option For Enterprise Storage?







    The majority of corporations are faced with issues about storage. While storage is not difficult, it must be easy to archive and be available when needed.

    In the past, tapes and cassettes have often been used to store data. These tapes are often stored in a secure permanent offsite location.

    Tape media on average lasts about 30 years and is more durable than disk but tapes take up a lot of space. Now there is a new option for storing data, writes Samantha Sai for storage-biz.news.

    Pioneer has announced that it has succeeded in developing a 16-layer read-only optical disc with mega storage capacity of about 400 GB or about 25 GB per layer.

    This is a major improvement from the past because multi-layered optical discs have not always been able to relay signals clearly from each layer.

    Pioneer has solved the problem of cross talk from adjacent layers using the disc production technology found in the DVD field.

    Pioneer predicts that the future of storage in much denser forms will continue to evolve as the science of optics is better studied.

    Ultra Density Optical (UDO) discs are third generation optical disc designed for very high-density storage of video data.

    Currently available Ultra Density Optical discs have an estimated shelf life of 50 years.

    They have been introduced into the market and found to be reliable and durable for short-term use. Currently the UDO is used by banks, health care facilities, and financial corporations.

    Pioneer said in a recent statement released from Japan that the growing storage needs of many corporations is expected to drive the demand for higher capacity discs.

    The company also mentions that buying just one high capacity optical disc is equal to buying numerous other commercially available discs. This way, resources can be conserved and put to better use.

    The experts meanwhile are not impressed. David Hill, an analyst at Mesabi Group argues that such technology may be more "suitable for storing video and archiving at the consumer level".

    Likewise, Greg Schulz, an analyst with Storage IO, mentions that for years there has been talk about holographic storage.

    However, he adds: "If you are holding your breath for that, you had better get a scuba tank."

    So far the optical disc storages have not proven their worth in a commercial market and there are many kinks that have to be sorted out.

    However, most experts do agree that Blu-ray at both ends of the market, and in specialized verticals such as video, is improving data storage and preservation.

    Despite the great advances in hardware capabilities, the dinosaurs of data storage – the disk and tape – that were long ago proclaimed dead, continue to be pertinent because they are constantly being improved, cost a lot less and are durable.

    For the future, most experts predict that data storage will be achieved by a hybrid of RAM based or some kind of flash based solid state memory, perhaps even a touch of holographic technology.

  • Hybrid Disc Plays On Blu-ray and DVD


    Japan-based Infinity Storage Media has launched the first Blu-ray / DVD hybrid disc.

    The disc sports a single-layer of Blu-ray (25GB) on one side and a conventional dual-layer DVD (8.5GB) on the other.

    Essentially it works by having different permeable layers for DVD and Blu-ray and different thicknesses between them.

    Since the lasers penetrate to different depths, it allows either the DVD or Blu-ray to be read depending on what player the disc is on.

    Obviously, the main benefit of the hybrid is that it’s backward compatibility.

    This means that users can switch it between their Blu-ray and DVD players without the need to have two different copies.

    The Japanese market is to be the first to benefit with the release of locally-made drama Code Blue.

  • Kingston USB Stick Reaches 64GB – And Climbing


    It wasn’t THAT long ago that anything over 1GB of Flash storage was considered impressive.

    Now Kingston Technology has launched its new DataTraveler 150, a 64GB USB Flash drive.

    This supercedes last month’s offering – a mere 32GB – as the largest in the outfit’s entire DataTraveler line.

    Jaja Lin, Kingston’s Flash business development manager, said the DataTraveler 150 takes transportable storage to the next level.

    "As file sizes increase with digital media content such as music and photos, the need for USB Flash drives with high capacities will continue to rise," said Lin.

    "The DT150 certainly addresses those needs today."

    The rising storage capacity of USB sticks comes at a time when the number of computers infected with viruses from USB flash memory drives is spreading.

    This has prompted calls for PC users to take precautions when sharing data with others via USB memory sticks.

    Measuring 77.9mm x 22mm x 12.05mm, the DataTraveler 150 comes with a 5-year warranty and works with any system with a spare USB slot, including Windows, OS X, Palm OS and Linux.

    The memory sticks come with a five-year warranty and are priced at USD $132 and $177.

  • SingleHop Offers 2 Gigs RAM Free


    Managed dedicated hosting provider, SingleHop, has announced that it has completed a free of charge, memory upgrade program.

    Over 900 SingleHop customers had less than 2 GB of RAM in their servers when the program commenced in July 2008.

    The company says now almost every customer has a minimum 2 GB of RAM.

    All new customers will receive a minimum of 2 GB of RAM in their servers, also free of charge.

    SingleHop allowed customers to schedule the time and date when their upgrade would be performed during the process.

    The entire program, valued at over USD $100,000, was aimed at increasing customer loyalty and satisfaction, as well as improving SingleHop’s competitiveness in the marketplace.

    Zak Boca, president of SingleHop, said two very important goals were accomplished through the upgrade program.

    “First we increased the satisfaction and loyalty of our existing clients by giving them an upgrade for free,” he said. “Second, we made our server offerings more competitive with the overall marketplace.”

    Boca said many hosting providers like to upgrade their packages for new clients, but don’t touch the packages for existing customers. He said this was counter-productive.

    “We’re just as concerned with keeping current customers happy as we are with attracting new ones,” he said.

    The third quarter of 2008 has seen a huge surge in SingleHop product offerings including:
