  • Imo Pairs VoIP Capabilities With Its IM App

    Imo has been widely used for years now by fans of instant messaging looking to bring all their various accounts under one umbrella. The company recently announced that it is expanding its free VoIP calling service from an Android-only option to users on iOS devices as well.

    The Imo app can aggregate the eleven top IM applications into one easy service. And while Android clients have enjoyed free VoIP calling on top of all of that, any Apple users running iOS 3.1 or later who also have a 3G or better wireless connection will now be able to make their own VoIP calls.

    Users should take note that calls made while on your own 3G or 4G service will sap your data plan, and could be costly if you’re not too careful. Simply switching to an available Wi-Fi service will remove that concern.

    According to Imo representatives, the quality of the calling service should stand up to any traditional phone. Add that to the app’s voice-based IM service, photo sharing capability, and group messaging through Google Talk, Skype, Facebook Chat and many others, and you’ve got one powerful tool on your mobile device.

    The proof is in the numbers. To date, Imo has been downloaded more than four million times. And people are really using it as well. They average more than fifty million messages delivered each and every day, from over 700,000 regular users. Imo added VoIP calling to their Android app in February of this year, and it is a bit odd that it took them so long to figure it out for iOS customers. That delay may cost them some users, as there are now several other VoIP service apps for iOS devices that have already gained traction.

  • D2 Technologies Showcases its mCUE Converged Communications Client with Embedded VoIP for Android


    D2 Technologies has demonstrated its mCUE converged communications client for Android-based devices at an event designed to promote the adoption of Google’s Android operating system beyond mobile phones.

    During this demonstration, the embedded IP communications software platform specialist showed OEMs and ODMs how embedded software products such as mCUE can enable VoIP, video chat and other IP communications capabilities in stationary Android-based embedded equipment and consumer electronics devices.

    The company showed how, with mCUE, these devices can offer premium multi-service unified communications capabilities and deliver simultaneous interoperability with any communication service provider, Instant Messaging (IM) community or social networking platform.

    The client enables all popular communication modes to be converged to a single communications user interface (UI), including circuit switched voice (PSTN or cellular), VoIP, Instant Messaging (IM), SMS and video chat.

    mCUE includes D2 Technologies’ carrier-class vPort MP VoIP platform that is completely integrated into the Android framework, Linux kernel and hardware platform BSP.

    The free event in Tokyo, Japan, was sponsored by the Open Embedded Software Foundation (OESF).

    Doug Makishima, vice president of marketing and sales at D2 Technologies, said the OESF’s goal of ‘Android Anywhere’ will facilitate the expansion of the Android platform beyond mobile phone applications to many different embedded applications and consumer electronics devices.

    He said as an embedded VoIP technology specialist, D2 is working closely with OESF members such as MIPS Technologies and RMI.

    The aim is to develop and promote the adoption of IP communications and VoIP technology extensions to the Android framework for digital consumer devices.

    "These include mobile internet devices (MIDs), DTVs, digital picture frames (DPFs), portable and home media players, and set-top boxes," he said.

    Developed by the Open Handset Alliance, the Android platform is a Linux-based software stack for mobile devices that includes an operating system, middleware and key applications.

    D2 Technologies was the first to demo a complete communications interface, mCUE, on the HTC G1, the first commercial smartphone to market running on the Android mobile operating system.

    Formed in March 2009, the 25-member OESF is focused on expanding market reach for the Android platform.

    Founded by ARM, KDDI, Japan Cable Laboratories, Alpine Electronics and Fujitsu Software, the organization works with member companies on sharing technical information, co-development and co-marketing initiatives.

    The OESF and its member companies are working on standards and development of Android for embedded equipment such as consumer electronics and in-car navigation systems other than mobile phones.

  • Bristol Interactive Offers TV With PC – Not PC With TV


    Being able to Skype or IM with your favorite app from your HDTV would be pretty useful.

    Well, Bristol Interactive has developed a digital TV with an in-built Atom-powered netbook that would appear to allow users to do just that.

    While there are plenty of PCs on the market with TV tuners – the UK-based television manufacturer is producing 22" and 32" TVs with a gig of memory, a 160GB hard drive, four USB ports, and an Ethernet port.

    The as-yet unnamed devices work as normal TVs, but hit one button and the screen flips across to Windows XP and full netbook mode.

    Screen resolution is 1680 x 1050 pixels – certainly a lot more than you get on a netbook.

    The sets also come with a wireless keyboard with integrated track (mouse).

    Paul Fellows, CEO, of UK-based Bristol Interactive, said the two models are regular TVs but have the convenience of an ultra-compact PC built inside.

    He said they instantly switch between TV mode and PC mode, with no wait for the PC to boot up or log out.

    The TV, which operates independently of Windows, is always instantly available at the touch of a remote control button.

    Fellows said the TVs don’t have Wi-Fi – because of the reliability issues and the potential for support costs.

    Bristol expects to launch the system in October, with 22" models being sold for under GBP £500.

  • Fring Targets Mainstream Users With New Funding


    VoIP start-up fring has announced that it intends to accelerate its growth plans after completing a third round of funding.

    Avi Shechter, fring co-founder and CEO, said a key objective is to make the free VoIP and IM service easier to use for mainstream "fringsters".

    While no details on the level of funding were available, all previous fring investors participated in this round including US based North Bridge Venture Partners, Pitango Venture Capital, Veritas Venture Partners and VenFin Limited.

    Shechter said fring is already turning the mobile into the "ultimate social device" by mashing up people’s favourite forms and modes of communication.

    "We plan to add to the fring experience and make it an ever more central part of fringsters’ social lives," he said.

    fring users can currently share experiences with friends on facebook, Twitter, Last.fm, among others, while communicating via Skype, MSN Messenger, GoogleTalk TM, Yahoo!TM, AIM and ICQ.

    Shechter said the new capital would be used to make fring even more accessible to the rest of the mobile world.

  • Truphone Improves iPhone Mobile VoIP App


    Truphone has launched a major upgrade to its free mobile VoIP application for the iPhone.

    The latest version of the Apple handset’s first-ever VoIP app boasts increased ease of use, speed of function response, intuitiveness and simplicity – along with improved voice quality.

    Truphone 3.0 also offers an integrated IM client which ties MSN Messenger, AIM, Yahoo Messenger, Google Talk and Skype compatibility into a single page.

    Calls to users of Truphone, Skype and Google Talk are free over Wi-Fi.

    Use over cellular data is also possible.

    Similar improvements to Truphone for the Apple iPod touch are expected soon.

    Geraldine Wilson, CEO of Truphone, said the upgrade dramatically has also improved its UI and account management tools.

    "We’ve eliminated the need for compression by utilizing new advances in signal processing, making calls crystal clear," she said.

    All in all, Wilson claims competitors will have a "tough time" matching Truphone 3.0 in terms of quality and performance.

    The improvements certainly make Truphone a viable alternative to Skype, which also faces competition in the form of Vopium on the iPhone.

  • Social Networking and IM Broaden Appeal of Mobile VoIP Beyond Cheap Calls


    INTERVIEW: Alan Paton, research director for independent VoIP comparison website LowCostMob.com, tells voip.biz-news about the increasingly crowded – and sometimes confusing – mobile VoIP market.

    He also explains how social networking and Instant Messaging services such as Twitter have the potential to extend the appeal of mobile VoIP beyond simply offering cheap calls.

    Q: Why did you think it was necessary to set up LowCostMob.com and how does the service address this need?

    A: Though mobile phones have been popular for over 20 years – the penetration reached 100 per cent years ago and there are more mobile phones than people in the UK, many having two or more – the industry is far from mature.

    In fact it is now entering a period of even greater changes than in the past.

    With LowCostMob.com we are currently addressing one of these great changes and that is the availability of alternative mobile calling services, especially for international calls.

    Alternative phone services are not new in themselves. They have been a big part of the fixed line business since telecoms liberalisation in the 1980s and have become even more important since local loop unbundling was introduced.

    Ofcom (the UK regulator) statistics show for the UK there are at least 350 alternative fixed line calling services.

    But alternative calling services for mobile are new and have sprung up only in the last two years.

    The great enablers for this are:

    • the increasing computing power of mobile phones allowing them to run a wide range of add-on applications
    • their improving ability to access the web and services that the web makes possible

    We see an opportunity here to explain the growing range of offerings without the confusing marketing hype and to help users to select what suits them best.

    Solutions range from the very simple (you can use your existing mobile phone as it is) to those that require you to download and install an application (usually done in a few minutes).
    Many services make use of dual-mode smartphones (they can use WiFi). Each solution has its pros and cons.

    Q: What are the most confusing/misleading aspects facing consumers when contemplating mobile VoIP or mobile calling applications?

    A: The new services use one or more of several basic technologies, call-back, call-through, local number substitution, VoIP and WiFi, and it is amazing how often you have to dig deep into a provider’s web site to know exactly what they are offering.

    It is like a garage selling a car but making it difficult for the customer to know if its automatic or manual, diesel or petrol, or four door or five door.

    One of the biggest confusions is over what constitutes true mobile VoIP.

    We think it should be only those systems that implement the transformation to VoIP on the phone itself.

    Many providers call it "mobile" VoIP if any part of the overall connection to the called person uses VoIP.

    There is very little information on the current practicalities of using mobile VoIP; does your data service allow it, what quality will you get, what are the costs of using the data channel for VoIP, and the role of WiFi.

    Q: Do consumers base their choice of which service to use solely on price or are other factors involved?

    A: A desire for cheaper calls especially international calls is a big driving force but by no means the only one.

    There is also at this early stage of market growth a lot of interest from the gadget minded who just love to get the latest electronic gizmo.

    Another very big factor is the popularity of Instant Messaging, services like Twitter, and Social Networking.

    Managing your contacts is a real headache and people want access to all their communications services, and this includes social networking, when they are on the move.

    Many alternative calling providers offer aggregation services, that is access to all the IM communities or social networks that a user might belong to through one application interface on their mobile phone, and other services such as address book management.

    Cheap calls may be just one, and not necessarily the most important, of a rich range of features and new mobile services.

    Q: Do you see a move towards a particular type of service (Mobile VoIP, Call through, Call Back etc)? If so, what is driving this?

    A: VoIP is the long term future for the whole mobile industry but there is plenty of scope for other technologies for many years, perhaps indefinitely.

    Smartphones are having a big impact and from being a few per cent a couple of years ago are expected to be at least 30 per cent of the market by 2012.

    The iPhone has given a big push to the market giving users for the first time a really good web experience on a mass market mobile phone.

    The Skype WiFi mobile application for the iPhone achieved over 2 million downloads in 9 days of being launched. Incredible.

    The user demand is there. And, by the way, Skype is certainly cheap but it is by no means the cheapest for mobile VoIP calls. (See here for a comparison)

    Over the coming months we will see what Google with its Android operating system for smartphones and Nokia with its new product response to the iPhone, can deliver.

    Q: Is the current economic situation likely to lead to a clear-out in the mobile VoIP industry?

    A: No, of itself it won’t lead to a clear out, though I’m sure it will make conditions tougher for everyone.

    Changes will happen, companies will fail, new ones will appear, services will evolve or be dropped and new ones appear, but who flourishes and who doesn’t, depends most on management skills and sound product concepts.

    Q: What are the likely implications of potential legislation by regulators in the EU and US which could force mobile operators to allow mobile VoIP calls to be made on their networks?

    A: Huge. Think of those Skype iPhone application downloads and that was just for mobile VoIP over WiFI.

  • fring Mobile VoIP Gets WinMo Approval


    Microsoft has awarded fring’s mobile VoIP application its “Designed for Window Mobile” certification.

    The approval is the latest for fring, which has been working to develop its popular IM/ VOIP application for different platforms.

    In October, fring was approved by Apple for use on its iPhone and iPod devices.

    The company has also released a new version of fring for Windows Mobile devices (version 3.34), including Sony Ericsson’s new Xperia multimedia device.

    New features include the ability to send files over IP to fring, Skype, MSN and Yahoo contacts at the touch of a button.

    Navigation has been improved with a new ‘Go- To menu’, ‘Privacy’, and ‘Joystick-In’ settings, while Add-ons have been extended and improved and can be managed more easily through a new Add-Ons Management screen.

    Fring for Windows Mobile also allows HTC users to use earpieces for extra privacy.

    The application is available to to download from fring now.

  • Future SIM Cards Capable of Mass Audio and Video Storage


    Infineon Technologies and Micron Technology have announced a joint-venture to develop high-density subscriber identity module (HD-SIM) cards with a capacity greater than 128MB.

    HD-SIMs combine high density with improved security functionality, which the firms say enables operators to offer graphically-rich, value-added services such as mobile banking and contactless mobile ticketing.

    Operators are also able to securely update or delete applications through their wireless network while new applications, services and settings can be downloaded or pushed to the HD-SIM at any time.

    Working in close technical collaboration, both companies are leveraging their respective expertise to architect modular chip solutions that combine an Infineon security microcontroller with Micron’s NAND flash memory with features designed specifically for HD-SIM applications.

    Micron will manufacture the NAND on 50-nanometer (nm) and 34-nm process technology.

    Dr. Helmut Gassel, vice president and general manager of the Chip Card and Security division at Infineon Technologies, said: "Infineon envisions a new role of future SIM cards that will be capable of audio and video mass content storage and even Flash card replacement."

    Prototypes are expected to be available in the autumn of 2009 and will be sold in die form or in a chip card IC package.
