  • Mobile Phone Sales Fell in 2012 While Smartphones Thrived

    Half of last year, the research and market analysis company Gartner warned that sales of handsets are in decline, the final report for last year, which was published today, confirming the trend observed in August.

    The unfavorable economic climate that people from Gartner blame for this negative trend, has affected the sales figure for mobile phones. Producers managed to sell 1.75 billion pieces, a 1.7 percent decrease compared to performances recorded in 2011.

    The least demanded products were the featurephones, in the last three months they managing to attract only 264.4 million customers, a figure that marks a sharp drop of 19.3 percent compared to the same period in 2011.

    In the same three months of last year, smartphone sales reached a record level, the 207.7 million units representing a jump of 38.3 percent compared to the last quarter of 2011. In 2013, Gartner estimates that sales of smartphones will reach one billion and the entire mobile phone market will recover and reach a figure of approximately 1.9 billion pieces.

    Rivals Samsung and Apple have captured 52 percent of the market. South Koreans last year sold 386.4 million mobile phones, of which 53.3% were smartphones, while Apple, which is only selling smartphones, has sold 130 million handsets, an increase of 22 percent from 2011.

    According to Gartner, the Android platform has captured nearly 70 percent of smartphone market in the last quarter, followed by the iOS, down nearly 3 percent, BlackBerry OS, also in decrease, and Windows Phone, which managed to reach a modest market share of only 3 percent, but which represents almost double compared to the situation in late 2011.

  • CES 2013: Huawei Launches Three New Smartphones – Ascend W1, Ascend W2 and Ascend Mate

    Present at CES 2013, Huawei wants to conquer the world by launching a really interesting range of smartphones.

    Huawei Ascend W1

    Huawei takes its first steps into the world of Windows Phone 8 with a quite promising entry-level smartphone. Huawei Ascend W1 could be an interesting choice for those in search of affordable smartphones based on Microsoft's latest mobile OS.

    It comes equipped with a Snapdragon S4 Plus chipset (MSM8230), composed of a dual-core CPU at 1.2 GHz and GPU Adreno 305 + 512 MB RAM.

    The 4-inch display is limited to WVGA resolution, but the matrix with IPS technology promises satisfactory image quality. Next to the screen we have a 0.3 MP webcam for video calls and on the back we find a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash. Photo & video collections are shot in 720p resolution accommodated in the 4 GB of internal memory, expandable up to 32 GB via microSD card.

    In connectivity, we have access to WiFi networks and Internet 3G HSPA+, module for NFC payments, Bluetooth and GPS. Even if has a battery of 1950 mAh only, it should have to cover without too much trouble the energy consumption generated by the chipset and the 4-inch screen.

    Huawei Ascend Mate

    The second smartphone presented in Las Vegas is Huawei Ascend Mate, which is also the smartphone with the largest screen so far. With a 6.1-inch screen, armed with a quad-core chipset and a customized version of Android Jelly Bean, adapted with the interface Huawei Emotion UI, the giant announces to be the star of the fair in terms of smartphones.

    Helped by the technology called Magic Touch, the giant HD screen can be controlled even with gloves on, so using the phone in cold winter days should not pose problems. In terms of software optimization, Ascend Mate enjoys a user interface mode for one-handed use, restricting virtual keyboard and dialpad in the bottom of the screen.

    In the 9.9 mm thick casing lies a 4050 mAh battery, which should cover without too much trouble energy requirements of the 6.1-inch screen with LTPS LCD technology and the Huawei K3V2 chipset clocked at a frequency of 1.5 GHz.

    The configuration also includes 2GB RAM and an 8-megapixel camera that promises to please fans of photography and videos at 1080p resolution.

    Unfortunately, the initial rumors that announced the presence of a Full HD screen and 1.8 GHz chipset were not true, Huawei probably choosing to cut these specifications hoping to obtain a lower price, which could increase its sales.

    Huawei Ascend D2

    Unlike its brother Mate, Ascend D2 presents itself as a more practical and comfortable smartphone, which also offers superior set of specifications. Ascend D2 comes with a 5-inch Full HD display capable of rendering images with unmatched clarity thanks to the LCD matrix with a density of 443 ppi. Huawei Ascend D2 has the same Huawei K3V2 chipset installed, but on the back we find a 13-megapixel camera assisted by an LED flash.

    The silver framed casing of Ascend D2 hides a 3000 mAh battery, sized for approximately two days of running and the operating system delivered is Android Jelly Bean, improved by adding split-screen multi-tasking support (running multiple applications simultaneously on screen) and technology of augmented reality technology.

    Compared to its predecessor Ascend D, the new Huawei Ascend D2 is a step forward on all fronts: screen size and resolution, the performance of the chipset and the design of the casing.

  • Nokia Lumia 620 – Attractive Entry Level Smartphone with Windows Phone 8

    Taking the analysts by surprise, Nokia has launched a new model of its Lumia range – Lumia 620 – Nokia’s third phone that runs Microsoft’s latest version of Windows Phone, .

    Priced at $249, excluding taxes and subsidies from operators, the smartphone is a more attractive model in terms of price in the Lumia series. The new smartphone, launched during the salon Le Web 2012 in Paris, will enter the Asian market in January and will shortly be launched in Europe and the Middle East.

    Lumia 620 aims at younger customers, according to Nokia, and will be available in seven different housing colors.

    The 3.8-inch screen with 800 x 480 WVGA resolutions is more compact than the other two Lumia handsets, 920 and 820, which were harshly criticized for being too heavy and too thick.

    The screen comes with ClearBlack technology and Nokia boasts that it will be as visible in daylight as Lumia 920 and Lumia 820. The chipset is more than decent and allows HD video camera. Dual band wireless card is a plus, and the 1300 mAh battery should provide a decent range, but it will not be able to be charged wirelessly. However, the smartphone supports NFC connectivity.

    Like most advanced models, Nokia Lumia 620 comes with Nokia Maps, Nokia Drive and Nokia City Lens. Operating system offers mobile browser Internet Explorer 10, support Windows Live, Microsoft Office Mobile applications and 7 GB SkyDrive storage.

    Lumia 620 has a 1 GHz Snapdragon S4 Plus processor, with 500 MB RAM, 8 GB internal storage (expandable up to 64 GB) and a battery of 1.300mAh, according to Engadget.

    Separately, Nokia has announced on Wednesday the launch of a new smartphone, Lumia 920T, in partnership with China Mobile, the largest mobile operator in China.

    Overall, we could say that Nokia Lumia 620 is a step in the right direction. The smartphone looks good, has good facilities and has an attractive price.

  • Windows Phone to win Blackberry in US market

    Times are changing and so does the smartphone market. Gone are the days when Research in Motion was dominating the smartphone market. Now, Blackberry seems to decline in the US market, with Windows Phone being willing to take over its place.

    According to a chart from Statcounter, posted by WMPoweruser, Windows Phones are expected to overtake Blackberries in the US market until November. The fact that Windows Phone is on the rise and Blackberry seems to decline might justify the graph's validity. What's more, Windows Phone 8 smartphones are about to be released in September, which raises the competition even more. And the graph is further enhanced by the fact that Blackberry 10 is not expected before the beginning of 2013.

    With all these in mind, Microsoft should be happy about their recent progress in the smartphone market. Although many were questioning whether Windows Phone could make it in such a competitive market, the numbers are proving them wrong. Microsoft's collaboration with Nokia is already considered rather successful, since it was a combination of Nokia's experience in the smartphone market with Microsoft's fresh air. If you consider that the first Windows Phone has been released in US market only 2 years ago, and is currently about to overtake a well established name like Blackberry, then it is definitely a success.

    Blackberry on the other hand hopes that Blackberry 10 will help them recover, since they keep on losing their share in the market. Two years ago they held the 34.3% of the US market, a number which now seems really distant to them. Times are changing, Apple is dominating and Blackberries are only used by a small, but loyal, group of people that are satisfied with them and do not seek a change.
    However, are these people enough to hold such a big name?

  • Rebtel Competes With Skype in the Windows Phone Market

    Rebtel is the largest VoIP service in the world after Skype, and has been working hard to close that gap in recent months. This week they took another large step towards further industry dominance, with the launch of a Rebtel app specifically for the Windows Phone. It will be free for all users when downloaded through the Windows Marketplace.

    Rebtel has a massive network of local phone numbers, available in upwards of fifty countries. Their app allows customers to make VoIP calls internationally at an incredibly affordable rate. Rebtel already had apps available for all iOS devices, as well as tablets and smartphones running Android technology, and the release of a dedicated Windows app now means nearly all American customers can take advantage of their cutting edge service.

    Andreas Cernstrom, Rebtel’s CEO, announced the new product offering in a press release. He feels they have the most comprehensive group of mobile computing VoIP apps in the world. According to their studies, international calls can be made for 98% off standard phone service, while working through customers wireless phone plans, and not by utilizing data plans. That’s a huge distinction, as customers on many networks have a huge amount of traditional minutes, but limited data plans that made heavy VoIP usage immensely expensive.

    The Rebtel app for Windows phone not only allows inexpensive calls to any phone in the world, regardless if the receiver is running a Rebtel app, but it integrates the phone’s address book as well. International text messaging is available, for roughly 60% off standard rates, and the quality of the calls is elevated by the reliance on cell phone minutes, not data connections. The company expects Windows phone to gather larger and larger shares of the market as Microsoft unveils their latest operating system, built with the mobile app market firmly in mind.

  • Nokia Prepares New PureView Smartphones

    Nokia 808 PureView is just the beginning: the Finnish manufacturer making plans for an entire range of PureView smartphones with various forms of design and prices, all recommended by the camera’s excellent performances.

    As always, future models of Nokia PureView will have high-resolution image sensors, optical ensemble of high performance with Carl Zeiss and hardware and software adaptations for processing photos at the highest quality standards. The difference is that the new smartphones will incorporate these features into a more flexible housing, thus entering in line with the competition, which currently promotes slim phones – highly appreciated by customers, despite the poorer performance in terms of autonomy.

    Unfortunately, as regards the new Nokia PureView smartphones, for a more flexible housing we will have to accept not only reduced battery autonomy, but also the use of image sensors inferior to the 41-megapixel currently installed on the 808 PureView model. Even so, the new technologies developed by Nokia will help maintain pictures at a high enough level of quality that the PureView series to not lose its main advantage over the competition.

    Given the incorporation of technologies under development for several years, Nokia 808 PureView comes equipped with Symbian Belle OS. The WP version has been excluded so far, because the PureView technologies need to be adapted to the new software platform – time and resource consuming operation. However, it is possible that at least one part of the future Nokia PureView models to be delivered with the operating system developed by Microsoft – Windows Phone.

  • Microsoft Compels You to Update – Windows Phone 7.5 Will No Longer Be Optional

    Microsoft makes final preparations prior to compel its users to switch from Windows Phone 7 to Windows Phone 7.5.

    Shortly, Windows Phone 7.5 will not be optional. If you have a smartphone running WP 7 and refuse to make the update to WP 7.5, you will lose the possibility to buy new apps from the Marketplace. Moreover, you will risk being unable to update the ones that you already have. Although this information has been circulated in the past, a new blog post on WindowsTeam confirms the proximity of the event.

    The update does not come without problems. Although some users have had the opportunity to update the operating system for the smartphones with WP, many users have knowingly avoided the upgrade to Windows Phone 7.5. The reason?

    Many of those who have installed the update complained that their virtual keyboard disappears. A user said on one of the Microsoft forums that the problem with the keyboard that disappears is absurd.

    Microsoft partners are also guilty for this issue. After being notified for the first time about the virtual keyboard problem, Microsoft has tried to be operative and worked on an update. Unfortunately, the 8107 update from Microsoft had to go through the mobile operators before reaching the terminal, which is why there have been recorded terrible delays. The AT&T users of Windows Phone 7.5 – the most important mobile operator partner with Microsoft in the U.S. – even today, after 3-4 months after the event have not received the patch.

    On Apple’s terminals this thing would not happen, thanks to the centralized system of updates, which is delivered to the iOS users on the entire planet in one day.

  • Stephen Elop in an Interview About Nokia and Windows

    In an interview with people at The Verge, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop, was extremely pleased regarding the company’s performance after the first year of strategic partnership with Microsoft.

    Being obviously aware of the negative consequences of the radical strategy change, of which the most important is workforce reduction, Stephen Elop said that Nokia is currently in the middle of transition. Regarding the transition to Microsoft, Nokia CEO said: “One year after making big decisions on the company, I’m surer than ever that I made the right decisions”.

    Nokia’s impact on the development of Windows Phone starts to be felt just now, and the Finnish company still wants to influence the direction of this platform. Given that Microsoft is centralizing the entire ecosystem around the Metro interface, examples being Windows Phone, Windows 8 or Xbox Live, Stephen Elop showed confidence in expanding the Nokia’s influence towards multi-platform horizons, but this influence is currently in an early stage, details still being premature.

    As expected, in what concerns the tablets, Elop has shown interested in the field but also the reluctance, trying to make the best decision in this crowded market.

    Asked about the amalgamation of smartphones launched at MWC 2012, including those under the Nokia brand, Stephen Elop gave a cold and calculated answer: “Which one do you remember?” Unfortunately, a lack of differentiation between terminals it only reflects in a lot of terminals that will not keep the headlines too much.

    Regarding the last star in MWC 2012 – Nokia 808 PureView – and the decision to boost it with Symbian OS, the CEO said that the technology had to come out, being the best method at this time.

    In what concerns the Smoked by Windows Phone campaign, Stephen Elop has also shown his appreciation and enthusiasm. He said such an aggressive campaign based on tests and usage scenarios, rather than tables of specifications, is exactly what the platform needed in order to win in growth.

    However, it remains to be seen what Nokia will be up to over the next year or if Nokia will still exist…

  • Windows Phone 8, Detailed in a Massive Leak

    Pocketnow.com managed to take a look at a video presentation of the future Windows Phone 8, in which Joe Belfiore, Windows Phone Senior Vice President at Microsoft, speaks to Nokia partners and from which results major changes that will affect the platform in the fall.

    Along with the leak from pocketnow.com, Paul Thurott hurried up to partially confirm the information he had in a blog post (probably under NDA).

    Basically, Windows Phone 8 – which will be called Apollo as it has been speculated for a long time – will be an important step from the current Windows Phone 7.5 from, actually, all points of view.

    DataSmart: Optimizing Data Connection
    Those who own a Windows Phone definitely know that the management module for data connection is not very intelligent and that sometimes the user has to insist until the phone connects/reconnects to a Wi-Fi. This is why in Windows Phone 8 will appear an option called DataSmart that will make order on how data connections are used. First of all it will focus on optimizing and prioritizing connections via Wi-Fi when available instead of 3G. In the Local Scout channel in Bing Maps will be provided detailed information about hotspots.

    Even more interesting is that Internet Explorer 10 will be able to use a proxy server feature through which data will come optimized, similar to the current option in Opera mobile.

    Support for the Business Section
    It was expected that at some point the BitLocker feature will reach the mobile platform too. It seems that Windows Phone 8 will have that and it will use the same 128-bit encryption technology seen on the PC version.

    Detailed information is very important and shows an interesting direction towards which Microsoft wants to go with Windows Phone, but what is not said yet is: Would the current Windows Phone devices have any chance to upgrade to Windows Phone 8 in the upcoming fall?

  • Microsoft and Samsung Have a Deal on Windows Phone and Sharing Patents

    Microsoft and Samsung have signed an agreement targeting three important goals: developing Windows Phone solutions, distribution of Android devices and exchange of patents. The formalization of this agreement, of a great importance for its content and its strategic value, will undoubtedly lead to significant changes in mobile devices.

    The Pro-Windows Phone Agreement
    The two parties have decided to get involved in developing new environmental solutions for Windows Phone, just a few days after the announcement of the first Samsung devices equipped with Windows Phone Mango, which widely opens new horizons for both groups. Microsoft needs manufacturers that ensure the quality, while Samsung is looking for an alternative in avoiding an imbalance generated by favoring the Android operating system.

    The Anti-Android Agreement
    Another very interesting move made by the two companies is what concerns the Android devices: Microsoft will receive from Samsung a share of the profits obtained from the sale of each Android smartphone distributed.

    It's quite difficult to assess the amount in order to determine whether this sum is close to the $ 5 for each device – amount agreed into the contract signed by Microsoft with HTC.

    Another interesting fact is that Samsung has also signed, in this context, on the mention: “Android violates the Microsoft’s intellectual property so that Samsung accepts the payment of a small “fine” in order to continue distribution without problems”.

    An excellent move on the chessboard of the biggest players on the market, given that the group in Redmond will receive the more so as its Android rival will be successful, which will definitely lead to a confrontation with the colossus in Mountain View.

    The Agreement on Patents
    Even the thorny issue targeting the patents has found the solution in the agreement signed by both parties: Microsoft and Samsung have granted a mutual license for the exchange of strategic patents, so that both groups will be able to develop their projects without the risk of further legal battles.

    The content of the agreement puts Google against the wall in the most serious way, but brings to the forefront the possibility of adopting a compromising solution on the issue of patents battle.

    Advancing the idea of licensing as a viable solution, through which the intellectual property is being recognized, it is clearly approaching this issue, in the spirit of supporting the innovation and the development in the technology sector.
