  • SanDisk Develops Tech That Allows 64GB Flash

SanDisk has announced plans to ship an ultra-dense form of NAND flash memory that could herald a breakthrough in storage.

Called X4, the technology uses a special memory controller that maintains data traffic speed while still fitting four bits of data per cell.

The method allows SanDisk – and Toshiba – to place 8GB of memory on a single chip, twice as much as before.

It does this while still maintaining a transfer speed of 7.8MB per second.

Since it is common to find four of these chips stacked together in a single package, the technology potentially doubles the amount of storage available on a high-end flash memory die to 64GB.

But it should remains small thanks to SanDisk’s more recent 43 nanometer manufacturing process.

Toshiba began making 32GB packages at the end of last year.

SanDisk expects the first X4-based products to be available in the first half of 2009, with memory cards being the most immediately recognizable offerings.

It’s not clear if the technology will be adopted in third-party products containing the larger-capacity flash.

Toshiba has supplied Apple with memory for the iPhone and iPod touch as well as other competing device makers.

  • Job Losses Expected At SanDisk

SanDisk is about to announce job cuts of around 15 per cent of its staff – or between 450 to 500 employees.

Quoting unnamed industry sources, Engadget reported today that the job losses were to reduce costs following a USD $155 million Q3 loss and sales that have sunk by 21 per cent year-on-year to USD $281 million.

SanDisk has just announced a new technology that will allow solid state disk (SSD) drives to perform up to 100 times faster than they can now.

Called ExtremeFFS (Flash File System), it will accelerate random write speeds by up to 100 times over existing systems.

The technology will appear in SanDisk SSD drives from next year.

  • SanDisk Launches 32GB Flash

SanDisk has introduced a 32-GB CompactFlash card aimed at digital photographers and videographers.

At twice the size of SanDisk’s previous largest product the latest Extreme III CompactFlash is the company’s largest CF storage device.
It has read and write speeds of 30 MBps.

The higher-capacity card is intended for photographers using Hi-Def camcorders and will enable users to store as much as 80 minutes of 100 MBps, 10-bit, 4:2:2 HD video.

This is of sufficient quality for today’s professional video applications, according to SanDisk.

For photographers, the additional capacity is useful for storing pictures shot in RAW format.

The format uses 10 times the storage space as regular JPG images, but provides higher-quality images.

The card can operate under temperatures ranging from minus 13 degrees Fahrenheit to 185 degrees Fahrenheit.
    Pricing (all in USD): 2 GB, $45; 4 GB, $70; 8 GB, $130; and 16 GB, $240; 32 GB, $300.
