  • Aress Launches Unlimited Online Data Backup Service


    Aress Software has launched an online backup solution which gives 1GB of free space and also comes with an unlimited storage option.

    Called BackupandShare.com, the service is aimed at business and individual users, and has an ability to schedule backup for PCs and Macs.

    The India-based company said the solution offers 128 bit AES encryption for secure data storage.

    At USD $49.95 for and Individual plan and $150 USD for Business plan annually, the service provides unlimited capacity to securely store files and media collections remotely and automatically.

    Aress said data is stored in an architecture that’s isolated, multi-tiered and gated in a secure data center. It also provides 24/7 customer support.

    Other features include sharing files, photo album, maintaining playlists, remote access and mobile access.

    The BackupandShare desktop application is also available for downloading to PCs.

  • HP's Consumer PC to Come With Symantec Backup Storage


    Symantec has announced an agreement to distribute Norton Online Backup on HP consumer desktop and notebook PCs worldwide.

    The move is part of Symantec’s plans to expand its consumer business beyond its line of Norton security products.

    The 30-day trial offer of Norton Online Backup will come preinstalled and will provide five gigabytes (5GB) of secured online storage. It will be followed by an annual subscription for USD $50.

    While nearly half of consumers report having lost files in the past, less than a third regularly back up.

    By providing the online backup solution, Symantec is hoping to benefit from its ease of use and HP’s market strength.

    The cloud backup service is one of various new products Symantec has launched in the last 12 months to drive sales.

    However, analysts suggest it may take some time for the backup product to substantially boost sales.

    Symantec already has a PC distribution agreement with HP, through which it sells Norton Internet Security, a suite of programs to fight hackers and other threats.

  • Vembu Launches Online Backup on Amazon Web Services


    Vembu Technologies has made available for production StoreGrid Cloud AMI, an online backup "virtual appliance" on Amazon Web Services.

    The company says that with the StoreGrid Cloud AMI and the Amazon Web Services infrastructure, it is now possible for service providers to offer a scalable, secure and highly redundant online backup service to their small and medium business (SMB) customers without any upfront capital investment in a data center.

    Online backup service providers can now configure the StoreGrid Cloud AMI virtual appliance to run as a backup server in the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2).

    StoreGrid Cloud AMI will use the Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) to store backup data from client machines at remote locations.

    The StoreGrid Cloud AMI virtual appliance also leverages Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS) to store meta-data information in the MySQL relational database.

    Steve Rabuchin, director of Developer Relations and Business Development for Amazon Web Services, said AWS is designed to help alleviate for its customers, the cost and effort associated with building, operating and scaling technology infrastructure.

    "We are pleased that the StoreGrid Cloud AMI is able to leverage Amazon Web Services to extend this service to their customers," he said.

    Even service providers who want to keep backup data in their own data centers can use the StoreGrid Cloud AMI virtual appliance as a replication server. This deployment would enable them to replicate the backup data into the Amazon S3 storage cloud, thus offering more redundancy to the data.

    Sekar Vembu, CEO, Vembu Technologies, said that investing, managing and scaling server and storage infrastructure is one of the most complex tasks for any online backup service provider.

    "StoreGrid Cloud AMI for Amazon Web Services eliminates this complexity by virtualizing the computing and storage infrastructure in a cloud," he said.

    Vembu released the Beta version of StoreGrid Cloud AMI in December 2008, and since then more than 50 service providers have been testing it.

    This production release incorporates feedback from these Beta partners, including the enhancement to use Amazon EBS as a temporary cache before uploading backup data to Amazon S3.

    StoreGrid Cloud AMI is available for purchase now and is priced as an annual subscription per StoreGrid backup client, with USD $30 for desktops and USD $60 for servers.

  • Symantec Launches Norton Online Backup Web Service


    Symantec, makers of Norton security software, has announced the availability of an online backup service.

    Norton Online Backup, which automatically stores files and digital assets, is the first Web-based consumer offering delivered by Norton.

    Intended as a simple-to-use backup system, it allows digital photographs, financial documents, music collections and archived e-mail to be stored through a website.

    Up to five household computers can be safely backed up, managed and restored through a single, central, remotely-accessible account.

    Once users have downloaded a small desktop agent, which manages a backup of the PC, a Web browser is used to restore or download previously backed up files from anywhere.

    This sets it apart from many other online storage technologies that require the user to use the same PC for backing up and accessing online files.

    Rowan Trollope, senior vice president, Consumer Products, Symantec, said more and more of people’s most valuable assets are stored on computers.

    "Norton Online Backup offers total peace of mind through a comprehensive, easy-to-manage backup solution that not only safeguards users from data loss, but makes valuable assets available from any Internet-connected PC in the world," he said.

    Norton Online Backup is available now for purchase in the US. It will be available worldwide in the coming weeks.

    The suggested retail price for Norton Online Backup is USD $49.99 per year, which includes 25 GB of online storage to backup files from up to five of family PCs.

    Additional storage space can be purchased in increments of 10, 25, 50 and 100 GB.
