  • Top 10 Activities of the New Smartphone Users

A recent study by Ericsson ConsumerLab points out 10 of the most common activities of a new smartphone user.

In the order of popularity, the new smartphone users inaugurate the device by installing check-in applications like Foursquare, in order to let friends know their location. The next activity is installing navigation applications that provide maps and traffic information, applications that enable them to watch TV on the Internet, watch movies, or play online.

On the sixth place are ranked the applications that allow users to watch videos live on the Internet, followed by applications that enable them to access social networking games, to use Twitter and read or write on blogs.

In addition, 69% of respondents recognized that use applications to access the Internet on a daily basis, and 20% of them use every day large data traffic services, such as video and TV applications, maps and navigation.

The study was conducted on markets in India, Brazil and Russia, where the use of applications is different from the model seen on developed markets. For example, two out of five users are visiting rarely or never the official platforms that markets applications and download, instead, applications from third party websites or forums. Almost half of users have firstly downloaded applications on computer and then transferred them to the smartphone.

"These figures reveal strong interest in apps that enable consumers to deal with daily challenges and interact with people, places and things in their urban surroundings. We believe that, "Smartphones and apps will be key in transforming everyday life for people in high growth markets going forward into the Networked Society", said Jasmeet Singh Sethi, Senior Specialist at Ericsson ConsumerLab.

  • Paid Apps Imminent For Android Market

Google’s Android Market is expected to begin accepting paid applications this week for the first time.

The move could provide a much-needed boost to the platform, which currently has around 800 applications.

This is far below what Apple’s App Store had achieved in its early months. Incidentally, the App Store has just passed the 20,000 mark for apps, with over 500 million downloads.

While Android Market’s position can partly be attributed to the G1 not being as popular as the iPhone, that’s not the whole story.

Another key element could be the fact developers haven’t been getting paid to come up with shiny new apps for Android.

With the incentive of remuneration thrown in, the desite to create software for the G1 and soon-to-be launched handset additions to the Android platform is likely to be much stronger.

Interestingly, Google is deviating from Apple’s revenue model in that it receives nothing from the downloading of paid apps.

Both app stores will give developers 70 per cent of the revenue, but whereas Apple pockets the other 30 per cent Google is passing it on to the carriers and to pay settlement fees.

Anything that gets the Andoid Market rolling has to be welcome, expecially as others – including RIM, Microsoft and Palm – are expected to launch their own app stores very soon.

  • Samsung Primes App Store and 12-megapixel Camera Phone

Samsung is to launch a mobile applications online store later this month at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

It also has a host of handsets lined up for their debut in Spain, including what is being touted as the world’s first 12-megapixel camera phone.

The app store is expected to launch with 1,100 applications for Samsung S60 and Windows Mobile devices.

It will initially only be for UK customers.

In a refreshing move, the online store will have no initial or ongoing costs for developers associated with marketing or hosting software.

Samsung will allow freeware to be distributed at no cost to the developer.

If or when the app store is to be enlarged to other markets is not clear, nor are Samsung’s plans to support other platforms.

As well as the launch of the 12-megapixel camera phone in Barcelona, Samsung is expected to announce an upgrade to its 8-megapixel Innov8 camera phone, possibly with a nifty 3.5" zoom lens.
